Many parents will not allow their daughters to be taught by male teachers because they think it is inappropriate. Unfortunately, female teachers are very scarce. This creates a self prepetuating cycle.Related content

i'm glad this photo was given a DD so that many people will be able to see and appreciate it. unfortunately, it seems not many people bother to read the caption you included, so they miss the point of the photo.

When I first looked at this, my thought was Afghanistan. From browsing through your gallery, I still think that's where this photo was taken.
I have to agree with the comment that the title doesn't reflect the mood that you were trying to create, and I'm a bit confused about all the comments saying how funny and cute this is... the tones of the shot, and the tone of the words don't reflect any humour to me.
The composition is good, I think the fact that the door jamb is centred seems to show a divide. Well done, and congratulations on the DD, although I'm not sure if they quite understood your intention either...
Then again I could be completely wrong.

I don't know what it was about the pic, I guess having a bit of knowledge of Afghanistan helps, but it's just... the walls, the child... they're uniquely Afghan. I felt really stupid saying that after I looked through your gallery and saw all the other Afghanistan photos... but oh well.
Funnily enough, we were discussing this in my Language & Literacy class the other day, that no matter what the author's (or artist's) intentions everyone will view the piece in a slightly different way dependent on their past, surroundings, religion, values, and even their mood at that time of day. I don't think it reflects on your work in any way, it just shows how unique we all are, and it's a wonderful thing that we all see things differently, it gives us renewed perspective.
This picture has a really special meaning for me now, and I feel the need to share it with you. I'm studying education at the moment, and felt like I was banging my head against a wall... it seemed pointless and I wondered if I had made the wrong choice. I was seriously considering dropping out and was at a low point when I saw your picture. When I saw it, and read the description, it reminded me why I wanted to be a teacher in the first place. I don't want to teach people who have all the things they want, who are privileged and to whom an education is unimportant. I enrolled in my course to gain the skills to become a teacher at any level and travel. I want to go to places like Afghanistan, and teach the girls enough to read and write, just what they need to get by and help themselves and their families achieve something a little bit better. Gosh, now I have a tear in my eye. Sigh. I think you know what I mean, you've been there, you've seen it first hand. I just wanted to thank you for giving me that gift and reminding me of my purpose.
Seems like maybe we both got something out of this experience. Thanks Carlos.

Definitely agree with the title. I coulda done better then that.
Regarding interpretations and intentions. Like I mentioned before, nobody but me can really take credit for other people understanding or misunderstanding my work. If I hadn't included a description probably no one would have understood my intention.
Let's compare it to a poem. If I write a poem and 100 people interpret it 100 different ways does that say more about the people or the poem? Probably more about the poem.
So then I have to look at my work and ask myself if enough people interpreted it the way I wanted them to. I personally don't mind that some people just appreciated the photo without the message. For me the messsage is more important then the photo but I can't stand it at school when people are always trying to bang me over the head with their world saving agendas.
Hmm, I hope none of that sounded like an explanation. Read my latest journal entry for my thoughts on explanations. Darn it, it kinda does. Quick, let me rationalize it.
I think by critiquing the interpretations you inclined me to defend the variety of interpertations and therefore I was tricked into explaining myself. Very sneaky.
My main point was, thank you so much for sharing your perspective with me and making me evaluate intentions vs interpretations.

Man, I would never admit to a tear but I'll admit to getting a little choked up. Like I swallowed a pollywog or a small frog. I mean, I can't really ask anything more from photography then what you've given me. The knowledge that a photo I took helped someone across the globe make a pivotal decision in their life is very priceless, and not a little scary. A life dedicated to helping others has great rewards but also comes with great sacrifices as well. You have my utmost respect and admiration. Thank you so much for sharing that personal insight, itβs a treasure and inspiration that will help me make important decisions in my life as well.

Hey there! Thanks for sharing that. Somebody else mentioned the same thing. I'm guessing we have more female teachers here in the US then Afghanistan. Show the photo to your female teachers and tell them as soon as Afghanistan is less dangerous they should go to Afghanistan to teach girls who won't receive an education otherwise. Tell them you would do it but you are a guy and many parents won't let their daughters be taught by male teachers.
