At first I was a bit hesitant about the image of Western Blaze – usually I tend not to draw just for a new concept. But then I thought – my versions of Blaze, Shadow, Wave and Amy are also not canonical, so why not?
The second question I faced – should I draw Western Blaze with a gun or with a fireball? On the one hand – a sheriff with a fireball doesn`t look right. On the other hand, I always try to be logical – so why would you need a six-shooter, when you are actually a freaking fire mage?
Eventually, I came up with a perfect explanation. Just imagine that you really are a young powerful FIRE mage on the Wild West? When you live in a desert, in a little town, made of wood, and moreover – you`re a sheriff, a good guy, who is responsible for some other`s lives and property… You have to admit, it`s hard to maintain the order in a wooden village using fire – unless you want to destroy and dominate, inspiring terror. It`s even more reasonable to use a much less destructive weapon and much more accurate techniques, especially if you need to neutralize a single bad-guy out of the crowd.
I`d rather say, this very concept of Western Blaze, which seems to be awkward and irrelevant, allows you to deepen the nature of the character. What if young Blaze doesn`t feel right about using her abilities? What if she doesn`t trust her own power? Could this power actually scare her?... Could she deliberately deny this power and do something, that no one expects from a fire-mage – use the gun?
After all, one bullet doesn`t burn out the area – it doesn’t even have to take a life. At worst, you won`t have to let someone die in agony – would it be deliberately or not.
You know – when a person, who`s able to control an unbounded and unpredictable firepower, instead chooses to use the gun with a limited impact and hone his shooting and reloading skills – that allows me to imagine much more about the character and his story, then just an image of a cute girl throwing fireballs.
