Description

Because John Watson is bloody awesome --gotta love him and his white jumperΒ

Medium: mechanical pencil... and if anyone cares, it was a Pentel Sharplet

Hint: His jumper is more than just a bunch of triangles, if you see what I mean ;]

About

SO. MANY. TRIANGLES.

It all began innocently enough with:
"Hey it'd be cool to make an optical illusion 'cause optical illusions are cool."
and
"I really like 'You see but you don't observe'... let's art with it! "

Many triangles later...
WHY DO I DO THIS TO MYSELF?

Anyways, I was inspired by the optical illusion cover of Type Addicted and decided to stick with triangles because JAWN'S JUMPER PATTERN--the triangles match the diagonal lines on his jumper.

I fail at optical illusions. OTL I know I should've seriously used a computer to do this, but I have little to no digital skill.

Totally worth drawing all the triangles! This is amazing!

Thanks! I think I might try to re-draw this and make it neater the second time around.

but... but i love the triangles! and it's also very clever, i've not seen it done before. and of course, john's likeness.

pssh, i don't think you fail at optical illusions. and ^5 about doing digital stuff too, LOL

Thank you! XD I suppose the triangles are all right for what this is--a sketch that ended up turning into slightly more--but I think I might redo this and make it more neater, especially since everyone seems to be responding so well to this. It'd probably still be traditional, but it would be nicer. And hopefully the second time around, I will fail less even though I may not have failed quite so miserably this time like you pointed out.

Here's to better luck with digital stuff for the both of us!

It's up to you wether you want to re-do this or not, but I really liked how I had to squint to see the word 'observe' because it's so light compared to the rest of the text. I like that it isn't apparent, because it brings forth the meaning of the phrase, the same way Sherlock himself seems to squint while processing details and making deductions. Good way of illustrating the point.

Everything you said was exactly what I was going for with this. Originally, the shading of the letters was a bit subtler (and neater), but then I darkened them too much and I had to do some damage control.. and the fixing didn't quite work out as well as I would've liked. XP
However, I appreciate your approval of the depiction of the concept.

But using pencils is going the hard way and I love the result!

well, I promised a comment so here it goes:

I love the lines here. I had a tendency to smudge everything and it was mu curse (until someone pointed it out for me). So when I see a drawing like this, with all lines in perfect places... It makes me melt
The illusion is good and clear enough, don't worry about it. And I admire your stubbornness to draw all those triangles -
I would probably give up, I hate to draw geometrical shapes...

Last thing that makes me drool on my keyboard: hair. Hair! HAIR! God, how did you make it so beautiful? I'm not able physically to draw his hair or something... they are so freaking difficult! And here you are, doing it perfectly in such a non-complicated manner...

Speechless

Alas, that's how it is when one can't draw digitally.

I too have a tendency to smudge everything, but I always go back in with an eraser to clean it up.
Thank you! The triangles actually weren't so bad once I got used to drawing them.

Ah, the hair XD Interesting that you would point that out because I love drawing hair. Though, in this drawing, I didn't do too much with it. I don't know if I can really explain how I draw hair... I just look at the texture and how the hair falls and try to recreate that. You are too kind. These are just scribbles.

Nah, we can learn anything, be it digital or traditional Β

Me, smudging... well, it was a disaster a few months ago, believe me. Now I learned how not to smudge but to shade everything properly... Well.Β

You love to draw hair and it shows!Β

By no means. They are masterpieces. Every drabble and scribble is a work of art and deserves attention! They are sometimes the milestones in our way to become a great artists and no less valuable!

Aw thank you! This was experimental piece more than anything since I'd never made an optical illusion prior to this. It's not as pristine as I might have wanted it to be (hence the vintage-y look), but this was fun and I'm glad to know that you like the outcome.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

equine-whisperer In reply to RavenWhitecastle [2013-05-03 00:33:52 +0000 UTC]

This is actually a pretty small drawing so I was actual able to draw straight outlines. But for the record, I can't draw a straight line unless it's a short one... I usually rely on very careful shading, making any necessary adjustments along the way to make things look straight.
In short, careful shading (or coloring if the letters are in color) does the trick.

'OBSERVE'...lol xDD
it's an awesome piece of work...i like the way you shaded it, even though you could've done it in a deeper, darker way - but on the other side i think doing so could've destroyed it, so it's probably the best that way; additionally this softer tone fits your style
all in all: great job!

i love the BBC Sherlock series so much
heard about it last week and watched it right away - oh dear it's too long to wait for season 3 xDD
drew something about it as well, a 'wallpaper' on 'a scandal in belgravia' [link]

Yep, precisely. ;]
Thank you very much! And yes, I do agree that the shading could stand to be a little darker (that tends to be my problem), though I didn't want to mess with the illusion anymore than I already had. It was actually darker before, but at that point the illusion had been totally undermined.

SAAAAME! When I watched it this past winter, I fell in love by the first episode. It was just beautiful. Season 3's a long time coming, but it'll be so worth the wait. XD Ah, thanks for link! I'll check it out

^^" you're very welcome
oh well...the shading...everytime i try to do everything exactly as i want it to be, it turns out to be somehow messed up, in most cases it's the shading and i go 'NOT AGAIN!!'
so i guess i know that prob xD
but don't worry, i think the lower shading is good on this one

kheheheheh here we go! check, mate sherlock fans forever

equine-whisperer In reply to pluto-my-way [2013-05-02 19:47:10 +0000 UTC]

Haha you understand my pain. XD I've gotten to the point where I shade very lightly so it takes ages for me to get to a decent contrast. Cautious to a fault because erasing is much harder to control than the pressure of the pencil on paper.
Yep Sherlockians ftw!

They should hurry with filming or the fan base will be died of excitement until they're finished! XD;;

It's fine. Life happens. I understand.
No, didn't read any tutorials, which probably would've helped. I just looked through a bunch of illusions, found some inspiration in the cover of "Type Addicted" and tried to work with that.
Oh no, I'm not saying they should rush things. All I ask is that there's no delay in the release. I may not be looking at the spoilers but that doesn't mean I'm not excited.
