my youngest son with his bottle of root beer at betty's pies in two harbors, mn... the light is pretty in that diner.

the info from the comments tells it all. i used a lens with the capability of having a very wide aperture, and i opened it up all the way. the film is portra.

I'm sorry if I'm being a pain asking all these questions, I researched the type of film you were using to find out more about that, the camera and lens, but i just wanted to know from your first hand experience whether there was something I'm missing or not. So thank you very much for your time, I've learnt a lot today with all the questions I've been asking people.

no problem. if you like that look, get a lens that is capable of f/1.8 or f/1.4. you won't regret it.

I've already been looking into the Nikkon 50mm f/1.8 lens for $150, so your comment is a great help in convincing me to go for it. When I eventually have the money of course.

oops, that was a scan of a print i got from the lab, so maybe it's just their printing that toned done the color.

no, that's how the negative scanned. i had to get rid of some pink that my scanner adds to everything. i think i always shoot in quite low light, so i never get the same result as others. i probably had the nd filter on in this shot too.
