Description dancing bears
twirl
at the whim of
the ringmaster

the elephants
and all the pretty horses
run 'round and
'round the ring,
picture-perfect ballerinas
perched on top.

lights flash
incessantly;
the tightrope walker
f
   a
      l
         l
           s
and the magic
(never really there)
vanishes


it's plain to see
the wrinkles
of-
      age [and] worry
etched
across the juggler's face

the half-hearted
roars
of the lions
get lost in the crowd

I slip through
the gap
in the tent; escaping
into the crisp
night air

and I wander
down the city streets
knowing
we're all alone
