Description Had a few hours after work, so I got some fun painting out of my system. Been meaning to paint a tall ship for ages now.

Hi. You're amazing! If you could take a quick second to answer this, you would honestly change my life: What do I physically need to do during practice, each day, to eventually be able to create art like you? How did you learn and become so amazing?!!

Can you please break down exactly what one extremely motivated beginner student would need to do, each & every day when he or she sits down to practice, in order to create these incredible photorealistic 2d digital drawing/paintings?

People just say 'Practice.' But I do not know 'exactly' what this entails.

Can you maybe make me, like, a list or something?!! So I can then go out and explore those topics? Or at least tell me what I need to physically be doing with my practice time so I can get as good as you?

If there's any books/DVDs/tutorials you can recommend that totally helped you get better, that would be so freakin' incredible!!!

Thanks for the help!

- Physically, you need to gain mastery over the muscles in your hands. That means being able to control the width of a line, the arc of a curve, etc. Keeping them cramped up with exertion will only make your lines look like chickenscratch- practice relaxed, flowing movements that use your whole wrist or arm. Things like calligraphy or inking drawings is great practice for this, though it'll take more practice to translate that analog movement into control over a digital stylus.

- Photorealism is almost entirely grunt work, not a lot of brains involved. Work exhaustively from life or photo reference until you're able to move beyond reference, and convincingly draw things that you can't look at. Start with something like the grid method to get the hang of judging proportions, and use the grid like training wheels to correct your eye. Then, remove the grid. Then, start combining references or changing them. Try to do something a little bit out of your comfort zone with each new drawing.

- Kill your darlings. Don't waste time nudging the same line around in the hopes that it will fix something that just doesn't look right. Start over, and the more times your start over the less painful it will be. "Aww! But that hand pose was my favorite part of the whole drawing!" Tough nuts. Skill is not a limited commodity, and you don't have to hoard it. The more you do, the more you will be able to do.

- Bonus points: Line of movement matters. Study cartoons and animation to help you understand how things move in space, and how the shape of a movement determines its direction.

I favorited this picture a long time ago, and I have to say that, in my opinion, it's one of the best ones I've ever seen. The water and the weather would have sold me on the piece even if the ship was a best guess, made-it-up-on-the-fly sort of deal. But it isn't. You clearly know what a sailing ship looks like. And that, for me, makes this picture perfect.

Thank you for painting this, and thank you sharing it with us.
