HAPPY BIRTHDAY, STAN AND FORD! (Originally posted on June 15, 2018.)

It’s that time of year again! Time for the Stans’ birthday, that is! Also, the 6th anniversary of the premiere of Gravity Falls!

Growing up on the Jersey Shore, the Jersey Devil was my “local” cryptid, so I’ll always have a huge soft spot for it. Back when I was a kid I remember hearing some 70s folk-esque song about the Jersey Devil not being the monster that everybody said it was, but rather a melancholy figure that just wanted peace with its neighbors. Seriously, how much would Stan and Ford love getting to meet THE cryptid from their childhood dreams of adventure? And getting to make friends with it, despite a no-doubt rocky start. (This was inspired in part by a long-overdue prompt from @ancientouroboros on Tumblr; I’m still planning to do my idea for that prompt, but couldn’t get it done for today. So have the “sequel” first.

There is no really fixed design for the Jersey Devil, so long as the head is sort of horse-y or goat-y, it’s more or less bipedal, and it has bat-wings, and horns. I really like the versions with the skull head, and for this I took inspiration from the Mari Lwyd, the grey mare of Welsh folk tradition, because I think it’s just so charming.

Stan and Ford, meanwhile, wound up becoming an inadvertant redraw of a nearly two-year old piece (which is hard to look at now!), so when I realized that, I leaned into it. Still looked at various refs of people taking selfies.
