I'm not a Metal Gear fan (I've never actually played all the way through any of the games), but I am very much familiar with the cardboard box. I'm also very much familiar with the cardboard box inventions from Calvin and Hobbes. My familiarities eventually led to this.

Unfortunately, I ran into a few of issues.
One, I originally had Snake standing up. But he was too tall and I had already drawn Calvin. With Calvin's head raised only slightly and the drastic height difference, they weren't really looking eye-to-eye. So I had to put Snake on his knees.

Two, I tried drawing the cardboard box at an accurate size compared to Calvin. That's fine, but then I had to draw Snake at an accurate size compared to Calvin. Since I chose not to make Snake cartoony, he turned out quite a bit larger. In the end...it doesn't look like he'd have any chance of fitting under that box.

Three, I didn't find very good reference for this design of Snake. I had to improvise/guess or leave out details on some parts. It's probably not all that accurate.

Those aside, I lazied out on Snake's legs and left arm. I'm not good at drawing legs and I was getting kinda tired of working on this by that point, so I just wanted to get it over with. Same with the left arm; I didn't care anymore, I just wanted it done. But even with all the problems, I do still like the finished product.

I generally left things a flat shade, except Snake, to retain the cartoon-feel. The idea to present it as a comic panel (with a border, a white back as if it were in a newspaper, and a "signature" in the corner of the panel) was last-minute.
