Description Shot during a Sunday afternoon walk around the House of Linschoten (which is not this farm house). This a type of farm typical for the area. Postworked yesterday evening in the train.

Coordinates: 52° 3'9.41"N 4°54'11.46"O
(Look for "Linschoten" in Google Earth and you'll get close)

Hard to believe that in such a short time we won't be able to see the house for the trees.

How large are the farms in this area? Would we find several of this house/barn combination along the street, or more distantly spaced?

EricForFriends In reply to MYLermontov [2009-02-05 11:36:25 +0000 UTC]

I'd say they're average to small, for Dutch standards, and very small for American standards; there are likely be several dozens of cows to produce milk; the area is very wet, so it can only be used for pastures.

Because of the way the area was developed in the Middle Ages, the farms are often very close to each other: farm houses were built close to a dyke (in this case a riverdyke) and from there, long, narrow patches of land were drained.

It's very clear to see from the air, if you have Google Earth installed. Look for "Linschoten" and then go in a southwesterly direction. The farm's coordinates are
52° 3'9.41"N 4°54'11.46"O

Hah, yes, the area is part of our own Bible Belt, and although I feel connected to the landscape and its very interesting history, this is as much an interpretation of what goes on inside these houses, or rather in the minds of some of the people living there.

I didn't know you were god-fearing?! We only have cheerful, happy-go-lucky catholics here, except a few calvinist-catholics, who are made bishop instantly by Rome as soon as they're discovered.

My roots are northern catholic and some presbaterian. My father was a catholic fundamentalist, a good dad but way too fond of hellfire and brimstone. I'm old enough to remember an old fashioned catholic education, happy-go-lucky didn't apply! Which is probably why I find this guy's books so appealing

I can imagine.

Although, I spoke to monk once who had various issues in his religious life, and he said: "I have no trouble with God, it's his ground crew that drives me crazy."

With my laptop I've been everywhere from here to Dubrovnik (bed including), except to the showers.

The other day I saw a documentary about the express train from Bucarest to some village in the far north, and the train driver had a potted plant in front of his front engine, as if it was a house window. Brilliant!
I must try a Romanian train one day... I'll take a seat in the back end though.

Thank you for your fave too!

Thanks! It's supposed you to give you the creeps a bit. It's a very religious area, and not always in a positive way.

it is a good title and the reference though ( if I just didn't read all those books about Boers, I wouldn't be this creeped out )

I grew up between people of that (not being one of them). It took me a while to realize that there are also people among them who can enjoy life, and they have their good sides too.
