Presumably the form he took in the woods of Wisconsin and mentally stampeded the heroes in "The Dweller in Darkness" by August Derleth.

So you are the one who made this picture. I had seen it around the internet and as the thumbnail of a few YouTube videos discussing the Cthulhu Mythos but I never knew who drew it. Nicely done.

And he's at least 10 times as tall as a man. He has a summer home in Wisconsin. That may explain Ed Gein and the other butcher fiends there.

I did that three times. That's nine times fast in a row. Would do it again. It's a fun toungebreaker.

Hey, I was wondering, where do people get this interpretation? I don't think Nyarlathotep is ever really described in the story, so I have always been curious as to why it's always the tripod tentacle head.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

SunZer0 In reply to Garjel-blah [2014-02-26 00:08:21 +0000 UTC]

Totally late reply, but Nyarlathotep sort of...implies it and Lovecraft hints at it as well. Nyar has countless forms, but he enjoys that of a humanoid male often times. However, it's implied his true form, were one to loosely describe the sanity-rending visage, is a crawling mass of vile tendrils stacked atop each other to form an impossible monstrosity. This is taken from stuff like the Dream Quest of Unknown Kadath, mainly.

In short, Nyarlathotep has many forms. His human state was one of them. His true form is likely closer to this and other such interpretations. Hope that helped.

Garjel-blah In reply to SunZer0 [2014-03-05 10:48:01 +0000 UTC]

That did help, yes. I haven't read much of the Dream Quest, so it makes sense that these implications you mentioned are there.
Thanks! I might also add that I was horrified to find that I have not yet favourited this, so I'll do that too.

Also the roleplaying game has an avatar called the Howler in the Dark/God of the Bloody Tongue which is taken from Lovecraft's implications of...this thing!

If it weren't for you saying you just came up with the design here on your own I'd say this looks inspired by PSO monsters. Regardless this is one badass looking Nyar. The fact it doesn't even have a lower jaw is really cool looking.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

erkanerturk In reply to aloeverahh [2011-11-25 13:05:52 +0000 UTC]

The original idea is not mine.
It's actually HP Lovecraft's creation but is my interpretation of it.

EmmetEarwax In reply to erkanerturk [2012-08-23 14:09:38 +0000 UTC]

A rather similar depiction, of which this reminded me, was in Peterson's Guide to the Mythos monsters. Nyarlathotep has or had a summer home in Wisconsin, and had this form there. Ed Gein was a devotee.
