I love Myst games, and jumped at the chance to do an interactive environment based on them for my final project in QTVR class. Sadly, I had no team to back me up, so it's not quite as epic as I hoped. Should still convey the idea though.

wow, that's pretty epic, even if it's unfinished, I love it.

Hello Ellen. This is sweet. What are you making this in? (Does it lack a panoramic render option?) I immediately thought "Myst" when I saw it. I don't get some of the interactivity... I want to see the book in the safe, am I missing something?

oh and it does have a pano render option if you set it up right... but my teacher felt there was too much lens distortion that way and told me to stitch it by hand.

I modeled it in Cinema 4D, rendered out a series of stills and photoshopped them into a panorama (plus color correction), and then coded the scrolling/hotspots in Flash. Yeah the interactivity sucks I had awesome plans for it (see response to FP above) but by the end of the quarter it just wasn't going to happen - there was too much that I hadn't prepped earlier in the quarter, like what would actually be shown in the microscope, and the content for the journal, and so on. I just slapped a lot of the real content in, unfortunately, figuring proof-of-concept would be enough for my teacher and I could always go back in and put better content/real interactions in.

Thanks for the comment!

Thanks - I've thought about asking if I can help them in any way, but from reading their blog it sounds like they're in contact with lots of more talented people. ^^ I'd be happy to support them if they needed it!

Wow, this feels so much like the Myst and Myst-style games from my childhood! There's a great atmosphere in this piece, you put some great detail in here.

Thanks! That's what you get for growing up with the game and seeing Myst-like stuff everywhere

Thanks! ^^ It helped that I could use some of the assets from my old laboratory scene... I had a lot of fun doing it though, so the time went quickly.

Thanks! I tried hard to get the lighting right, to look really Mysty. I had kind of an underground lab like on Gehn's Age in mind, and a couple of my classmates helped me a lot with conveying that.

The interactive version doesn't seem to be fully functional...is it unfinished?

yeah, I had big plans for this and didn't get anywhere near as close as I wanted. There were supposed to be a couple of journals to read, different slides for the microscope, and the jewel machine thing was supposed to be an actual toy... and I wanted music and everything. lol, as I said, not quite as epic as I hoped.
