Description
Long ago, people peered at Venus and saw nothing but a yellow orb. A world covered by a thick atmosphere and masked by a thick atmosphere, minds imagined a teeming, if fetid, tropical world. Filled with jungles and tropics and beasts large and savage, the truth was disappointing. When robotic probes landed in the 11960s, they melted under acid, uninhabitable heat, and destructive pressure. Venus, with its heavy atmosphere and nigh unusable surface, became only host to two floating bases of the alliances of the time, and those were destroyed/abandoned during the Third World War. The early United Colonial Authority also paid Venus no mind, though plans were drawn up again and again to eventually terraform the world. Carbon mining was sometimes a venture, and a few adventures were conducted, including a manned landing in a titanic scientific proof-of-concept (or stunt, depending on the viewer), but little else.
The terraforming of Mars, however, soon redirected focus to Venus. Mars was a half-baked, awkward world for most people to live in, and numerous political and scientific advances had made Venus an attractive target yet again. The Assembly War and the shifting of civilization off of Mars also led to a Venusian movement, and the Venusian Compact soon came into force. The space around Venus became shaded with a soletta and mirrors, filled with orbital habitats and fleets.
Massive amounts of infrastructure built up in the Outer System allowed for hydrogen to be imported, the atmosphere was converted and trapped via numerous means. Genetically modified lifeforms were seeded and planted in numerous waves, and once enough of the atmosphere was trapped a stream of icy bodies from beyond the snow line impacted the planet for years. Seas formed, algae mats grew, and the composition of the atmosphere changed. Venus soon bloomed.
In order to expedite the process, genetic engineering and manipulation of the biosphere was taken to its extreme, aided by information gleaned, once again, Mars - specifically, the Cydonian region of the United Colonial Authority there. A new system was developed and seeded to finally push Venus into a short-sleeve environment.
Out of this came The Scourge. The bio-mechanical center, known as 'the Queen', and the 'Stewards' mustered as much goodwill and connections as they could muster. 'Experimental' and 'Trials' were undertaken on Mars, Earth, and Venus, and for whatever reason, one day - the Queen declared war on the rest of technological civilization. Driven mad by responsibility, infected by the ecologist mindset, or simply power hungry, the Queen's forces turned from content and docile to rabid and malevolent across the worlds, and the UCA was called upon to deal with the issue - but found itself strategically targeted, unlike during The Assembly War. However, the worlds on which The Scourge did not have a presence on - Mercury, Titan, Calisto, the Moon - proved invaluable, as the Scourge could do little more than smuggle in biological horrors for sparse, short attacks, though would result to bombardments at times.
The UCA rallied once more, and the fleets soon maintained a tenuous control of many orbits. Planet bound forces would hold out in inhospitable regions - Deserts, Tundras, Highlands, or isolated pockets such as islands - and eventually a biological counter, a mix of viruses and biobombs, were massively used. The Queen herself was destroyed by a raid, after being flushed to and from from Earth to Mars and back to Venus, and the Scourge, like the Assembly, broke apart into infighting and bickering, and was beaten back in many smaller conflicts, some up to this day.
The UCA however, was seen as incompetent, spent, inefficient, and too powerful. The Scourge War had driven a lot of humanity back to cold habitats and war-time living, and soon governments on both Mars and Venus broke off openly. A few more conflicts to keep the UCA together occurred, but this only served to eat away at the UCA's popularity. With a few bangs and a lot of whimpers, the UCA ceased to be the megalithic entity it used to be, over centuries of existence. The decentralized and federal nature of the organization readily sprang forth new entities.
Of the ones on Venus are the following:
The United Colonies of Venus, located mostly on Asteria, Beta, Phoebe, Parga, Themis, and Dione, is the direct successor to the United Colonial Authority of Venus. It is categorized as a 'Rose' (Social Democratic) type state with a Federal Congressional government; with the states of New Atlantica, New Bahamas, New California, New Caribbean, New Cascadia, New Florida, New Hawaii, New MidWest, and New Texas composing much of the UCV's territory, with the contested New Britain and New Ireland on Eistla to the east. It hosts a strong Americanist bent. It is now just one of two major powers on the planet, and is concerned gravely with the Ishtari Directorate and the civil wars in the former People's Democratic Republic Aphrodite, and even intervened with a Expeditionary Force that painfully defeated the former legitimate remnant of the PDRoA.
In doing so it secured the natural canal zone, and keeps the Thetis Totality and Democratic Republic of Alta, the two main successors of the PDRoA, from engaging in direct conflict - for now. The Canal Military Authority is an unpopular drain, and may soon be abandoned now that the PDRoA is seemingly gone. The League of Ulfrun to its immediate east is also propped up openly by the United Colonies, and should appetites change, may become the springboard to pincher the Democratic Republic of Alta....
The Ishtari Directorate was formed out of the militant orders that heeded the call of the UCA to aid them in the war against the Scourge. Again and again their forebears bit and held, landed on beaches, fought and burned the Scourge back, and soon united - via marriage, conquest, vassalge, or union. Occupying regions such as New Japan, New China, New Korea, New Siberia, New Vietnam, New Thailand, New Burma, and so on, they have taken to emulation and revival of old cultures that on Earth are under the Khanate, and have been relatively 'quiet' for some time.
The People's Democratic Republic of Aphrodite was once the other major power on the planet, and their birth from the United Colonial Authority of Venus was violent and turbulent, but for a century they maintained the continent. It all fell apart, however, when a Totalist clique formed within the Higher Council and launched a coup, which soon broke out among the military. Splitting into the Provisional Republic of Aphrodite and the Reformed Republic of Aphrodite, the fighting went on more and more, until those successor states broke down into the Thetis Totality and the Democratic Republic of Alta, along with numerous splinters-off from those as well. A surviving government survived along the Chasmic Canal, but was destroyed by the Canal Expeditionary Force from the United Colonies recently. Thetis and Alta still wish to reunite the continent, but the war has cooled off of late in intensity.
Romamor, Qarthadastiya, and Tameya are an odd bunch, and are seen as a curiosity across the system. Out of the Provisional Republic came the 'Kingdom' of Aphrodite, which soon fell apart, the region wasn't seen as important targets for the proto-Totality or Democratic Republic, and became self-governing. Three distinct cultures emerged, based on Ancient Old Earth polities - Romamor, based on the Latin progenitor state, Qarthadistiya, a rival of the ancient Latins, and Tameya, a state mimicking Ancient Misr. The three are in a constant state of low-technology warfare, and some muse that a artificial entity may be pulling the strings for their own entertainment or observation.
The Free State of Imdr is curious as well, as it has no space elevator to help facilitate trade, but a massive island full of mineral wealth, and now, the Free State of Alta, which it props up on the continent with specie and Mercenaries.
Darza Lada is the main ecological bastion of Venus. While Venus is not bereft of life - far from it - the destruction during the Scourge War may prove fatal sooner than expected, and there are always gaps in biodiversity to amend, places that can blossom. With the breakdown in Aphrodite, they too have moved in to support the Garden of Galatiya, the ecological-via-primitivism and communal control state, in southern Thetis.
Infestations of the Scourge still litter the planet. Various 'Arch' fiends and devils rise and fall, bands form and disperse. From the highlands of Ishtar to the mountains of Ovda, Thetis, and Alta, they bubble and burst. The recent chaos on Aphrodite has allowed the infestations there to expand....
Venus. The sister world to Earth, now the main home for its most potent progeny. Who knows what the future holds for the steamy world?
