Elena: (notices the look on John's face) Why the long face, John?

John: I just... (sigh) I don't know, Elena. The day started out so well with catching a few new friends, but now, after that battle with him, I just don't know what I should do now.

Elena: Don't listen to Rabbi. He's nothing but a jerk.

John: Maybe. But that guy makes me so mad, I'd like to teach him something he'll never forget.

Elena: I'm pretty sure everyone who's dealt with him feels the same way.

John: Still, I feel like I let Hedgetree down. This was our first ever real Pokemon battle against a trainer, and we lost to a stuck up idiot. I just... feel like Hedgetree shouldn't even be a partner to a trainer as pathetic as me.

(Elena looks sympathetic to her best friend, then someone comes from behind them)

???: Do you know the first thing about taking care of your Pokemon?

John and Elena: Huh? (both turn around to see Henry behind them)

Elena: Henry!

(Henry has his arms crossed with a frown on his face as he looks at John)

Henry: I saw your battle with Rabbi. It looked like you and Hedgetree weren't exactly in sink.

John: (looks offended) What?! Not in sink? What are you talking about?!

Henry: (keeps his calm) I mean you two were battling like neither of you were ready for the battle, nor were you ready to start your journey.

John: How would you know that?!

Henry: Take a look. (takes out a Poke-ball and out comes Wagull)

Wagull: Wagull!

Henry: (puts on a bird arm guard and Wagull lands on it) The three of us have only started our journeys two days ago. So far, Wagull and I have been through many Pokemon throughout the forest, and after each battle, I've groomed, fed and entertained Wagull for its hard work. And from the look on Firuff's face, I'd say Elena has been treating it with lots of love since Day 1.

Elena: (looks pleased) Yep!

Firuff: Ruff.

Henry: (turns to Hedgetree) But from the condition Hedgetree's in, it looks like you haven't bothered to check its health after a battle. So when it came to facing Rabbi and his Firuff, it was tired from its constant battling from the last two days. And you acted like Hedgetree wasn't your friend, but more like a tool.

John: (looks taken aback then looks at Hedgetree) Hedgetree, is that true? (Hedgetree looks at its new trainer and nods a little weakly) Ugh. (regret and shame is in his eyes) I'm sorry, I... I didn't know.

Henry: (gives Hedgetree an Oran Berry. Hedgetree eats it and looks happy) If you want to become a Pokemon Master, John, you need to expand on your bond between you and your Pokemon, like me and Elena.

Elena: Yeah!

John: (looks a little upset as he thinks) Hmm... (Henry suddenly sticks his arm out to him) Uh?

Henry: Why not let us help you with your journey and your bond of friendship?

John: (looks at Henry then at Hedgetree. He smiles as he shakes Henry's hand) You got it, Henry. We'll go on our journeys together, and show the world what great friends we are from helping each other out, and looking after our new friends.

(Wagull, Firuff and Hedgetree look pleased at John's words as they know the last ones are directed at them. That night, the friends camp out in ruck sacks. Elena is sleeping with Firuff beside her, Henry is fast asleep snoring, John on the other hand looks to the stars, then has determination in his eyes)

John: (in head) Watch out, Rabbi. I've now learnt about the bond between People and Pokemon, and someday, I'll show you just how strong my bond between my new friends are.
