Description

Prompt 1: His coat dusted with as many stars that rival the night sky, Highlord Aether greets your Ballator as they climb up a rise. At his side is Regale , a frown present on the Mountain Ballator's face. The two stop their talking and instead turn to face your Ballator.

"Well met, traveler," Aether's voice is gentle and calm, but your Ballator can still sense a bit of weariness, "I have a task for you on this dark, new night. Travel with Regale; follow the red star in the sky. It will be a short journey, but I must know what the red star has to tell us."

Regale bows slightly to your Ballator before trotting off. Your Ballator follows, leaving Aether behind. It seems as though your Ballator has been traveling for hours, though there's no sun on the horizon to count down the time for them. The red star never seems to get closer or farther away, no matter how far you and Regale go. "I fear the star may be beyond my reach," Regale says, his sides slicked with sweat, "Let's take a break. What do you think is under the red star?"

Naida can only hope about what may be under Aether's elusive red star- her curiosity bubbles, the Highlord's uncertainty regarding the star fueling many thoughts within her as to the nature of it. As Naida traipses through the rocky, grassy plains behind the stoic Regale, she lets her thoughts wander. The crisp night air reminds her of a time years ago, where all the nights felt like the depths of winter to a foal with no shelter, nor a thick winter coat. With only the bodies of her friends to keep her warm, Naida had relied upon Ishi and Lorcán, not only for protection, but for companionship.
That one fateful night, that had shaped the rest of Naida's life, the three had been curled up tight under a rocky overhang, nearby a river. Naida had been between Ishi and Lorcán, and the latter had been nearest the front of the overhang to keep watch. The ground had shook with thunder and been illuminated in bright, icy-blue tones with lightning- but there had not been any rain yet. That was until Naida finally drifted off to sleep- that's when the clouds chose to split open and unleash torrents of freezing rain and hail. Lorcán had awoken, and nudged the other two awake.
"We need to find a new hideout," she had yelled over the pittering of the rain atop their rocky overhang, "It's going to flood the river. We need to get to high land."
The other two had faithfully followed Lorcán as she'd led them away from their temporary shelter and closer to the overflowing river.
"Are you sure about this?" Ishi had asked, her voice high with fear as she eyed the roaring waters.
"The only dry land is the island across this river!" Lorcán had insisted. "You'll be fine. I'll go over first and help you guys over."
With that, the fearless yearling had leapt her lithe body across the rushing river and landed safely on the opposite bank. Her red coat was dark with rainwater and her feet were smeared with sand, but a victorious grin showed on her face.
"You go, Ishi. I'll make sure you don't slip!" Naida had said with a smile, her own frantically beating heart stilled out of concern for her friend.
The hefty Plains filly trotted in place, gathering up the momentum, before launching herself over the river. Her front hooves caught the grass, but her hind hooves landed in the shallow part of the riverbank, causing her to yelp and scramble forward. She shook her whole body, yellow eyes still wide.
"Come on, Naida! Before it gets even worse!" Ishi yelled, despite her trembling.
Naida had tried her hardest- of course she had, it was in her nature- but she was the smallest and the youngest of the three, and the river had somehow grown more rough since Ishi had crossed. Naida's jump had fallen short and she had landed squarely in the middle of the river- and it had pulled her under so quickly she hadn't even heard her friends call out for her. She'd never heard them or seen them since that very fateful night.
She'd lost consciousness almost immediately- out of fear, not water inhalation- and hadn't expected to awaken. However, at the sensation of teeth latching themselves into the crest of her neck, she had. A colt much bigger than her had picked her out of the river and thrown her onto the bank, juts in time for her to turn and cough up the water she'd gasped in. With shaky, wet breaths, she'd looked up and seen the face of her savior backlit by the silver moon in a somehow-clear sky.
Thanking Aether for her second chance at life that day, Naida had fit in with the Aether-devout herd of the colt who had saved her. Despite how happy her new life was, she never stopped missing her first friends- the one who had given her the first chance at life. She hopes one day that they will cross paths again.
