I'm glad you followed the instructions of talking about you, most people did not so I had to wander their galleries and guess where their art is at, what the like, etc. Also, I am so glad you provided links to others art - I think that will help me help you. When I looked through *purplekecleon's gallery, I look more at her simpler pieces to make what I'm saying easier to understand. She does have a great use of color and keep watching her - I learn a lot by looking at other's art. When I saw this drawing of hers: [link] I want to point out some great things she did with her colors. First of all, the guy is green yet she does not just use the color green when drawing him. From what I can see, she uses some oranges (most noticeable on the left near his mouth) and this warms up the green and creates an interesting shadow. It also ties in with the color of her eyes. With the white/pink ribbon she has tied around the guy, she uses multiple pinks and purples for the shadows, but most of all - all of her colors are more muted and natural (colors you would find in nature).
Since you say that your colors are wither too saturated or too bland like this one, which I think is bland in the way that almost all your colors are pastels. I think using more earth tones at a not too saturated level would help. (Earth tones tend to have and undertone of brown, their compliment color, or something else.) I think that if you see a color that you like, try to use it in your own piece so you can practice.
As for =Feyrah's colors, I can't see the piece you like as the link seems to be broken, but she also uses a lot of natural colors but also incorporates some really saturated and bright colors. What I believe makes her saturated colors work so well is that she does use earth tones and the saturated colors come from the lighting, thus producing interesting highlights and overlaps the earth tones to bring the two together such as in this piece: [link]
Great first piece for the class and I also like how you have it fade into the deviant page color too, that's an interesting idea. I say try mostly to work on earth tones such as an example, you have lime green for some grass you might want to have used brown greens and blue greens instead and maybe even darker greens to move away from the pastel look - this is just the grass and it can be applied to the whole drawing.

You're welcome
I agree that she does use colors really well and thanks for the link - I love looking at tutorials. People have a different view on things and when you're learning, you have to find your own.
The green into a warmer green is what I am trying to tell everyone on the next assignment (which I replied to this too late since you already submitted it but I'll explain that there and - hopefully - make sense. A lot of people in this class, well pretty much everyone, doesn't seem to understand that when they submit that assignment and it can be a hard thing to explain online and not in person.
What I mean about "Earth tones tend to have and undertone of brown, their compliment color, or something else" is that, for example, lets say you have a red object but it's more of a duller or not as bright red and so I'll put a layer of brown first (undertone because its underneath, though it can go on top as well, whichever way you prefer) and then the red. Thus, the red is more of a brown red. If you add reds compliment, green, you can get all different kinds of reds that are mainly duller and sometimes gray. Does that make sense? (And it's not even an English term everyone knows, it's like an English art term) What can help is to look at colors of others work and so you see that they made something red so you can ask yourself - what made that red brighter/duller/warmer/cooler/etc?
Ah! That link is the one I tried to link to you. I can see it it is a beautiful peace.

It's so adorable! I love the colors, they give the picture a certain....softness, so to speak. The style oddly enough reminds me of Winnie the Pooh...could just be me though.
