  "For this project I'm going to have to require you all to work in pairs. The deadline is due next Monday. You have all weekend to prepare so I'm expecting all of you to be able to pass a detailed report on the Shinsengumi and it's contribution to the war. Am I clear?" The teacher asked, coughing lightly and propped his glasses onto the bridge of his nose. The class erupts into a chorus of 'yes' and 'hmms', satisfied, the teacher waltzed out of the room and in a blink of an eye everyone had crowded around each other. Some were looking for partners while some were making most out of the time to chat amiably amongst each other.

You however, sat idly in your seat.

It wasn't because you didn't have any friends. It was because of the fact that you had a lot of friends that you didn't worry about finding a partner. One of them was bound to ask you sooner or later and you didn't want to get in trouble with your next subject teacher by standing up and asking around. She was known for being one of the strictest among the staff after all, and you were sure she didn't get her nickname 'The Demon' for nothing.

The very thought of her sent shivers crawling down your spine. The last time she got mad a senior was made to run ten laps around campus. Lucky for him, Seirin wasn't as huge as the other schools.

"_[last name]_?"

At the mention of your name, you looked up from your boring desk (and your thoughts) and into piercing icy blue orbs. You pondered for a name and was just as relieved as him when the words fell from your lips.

"Kuroko...was it?"

"Yes. If nobody has asked yet, I was wondering if you'd like to pair up with me?"

To be honest, Kuroko was the last person you'd expect to ask to be your partner. First of all, you never spoke to him, it was a miracle you even remembered his name considering he rarely ever spoke and secondly, you thought he'd pair up with Kagami Taiga. But you weren't going to look at this gift horse in the mouth, he went through the trouble to ask you after all. You leaned back against your chair and gave him a firm nod.

"Sure. I'd love to."

Kuroko didn't speak, if you didn't know any better you might have thought he hadn't heard you but that was impossible.

"Are you alright?" You asked, feeling a bit awkward with the silence that ensued. Seeming as if he had snapped out of his thoughts, Kuroko scratched his chin sheepishly and shook his head.

"Everything's fine. I was just surprised, I didn't think you'd actually agree. I'm relieved."

"You're surprisingly blunt for someone so quiet." You mumbled darkly under your breath.

The next day was a Saturday and you didn't really like piling up work so you had Kuroko come over for the weekend and if he was as responsible and diligent as he looked then getting the project done in a day wouldn't be a problem. The only problem you had about him coming over was the fact that your older brother was staying home for his day off and the last time you brought a guy over he swore never to talk to your brother again. You didn't know what it was he did to the poor teen and although you'd rather avoid having a repeat of the last time, homework was homework and you needed it done before it gets in the way of the rest of your weekend.

After giving a quick run-through of your room to see if it was good enough for the human eyes to see, you ran out of the house and headed towards the meeting place you both decided on before-hand. Surprisingly enough he was difficult to spot despite his teal hair and could have sworn your heart leaped out of your throat when you noticed he was standing in front of you. You were absolutely positive he wasn't there from the start to begin with but you played it off and eventually you both made it to your house with no difficulties at all. You stopped dead in front of your house's front door and took a deep breath. Kuroko seemed to notice your unease and addressed you as politely as he could.

"Is anything wrong _[Last name]_?"

"Is that a boy with you outside ____?!"

"No it isn't!"

  How your brother managed to hear his tiny voice was beyond your imagination but nevertheless, you heaved a sigh and replied as calm as you could manage.

"Yes..."

Next came the sudden swish of the door as it flung open and the reveal of your brother's form in his ridiculous looking pajamas staring down at Kuroko for all he's worth. The tealhead however didn't seem as fazed as your brother hoped he'd be.

"Good afternoon." Kuroko greeted.

"...I don't like him one bit."

"Just let him be, he's here for a project." You grumbled before pushing him out of the way to give both you and Kuroko some space to enter the house. You dragged him up the stairs and disappeared behind the door to your room giving it a firm slam and locked the door just in case your brother was going to go after you.

"He's always like that, please don't mind him. He can be an idiot sometimes..." You said while gathering some books and booting up the computer for your project. Kuroko smiled, albeit slightly, then picked up a book from the pile to scan.

"I think he's a great brother. It just shows how much he cares for you and there's nothing wrong with having a little too much affection." You turn to meet his gaze at his unexpected response and a laugh rumbles through your chest.

"Yeah sure, wait till he starts pestering you about your curfew and possible boyfriends."

"He seems like a fun brother." He countered still.

"..You really don't get it do you?"

The day ended quickly and night was quick to fall, Kuroko had to leave but your mother had insisted he stay over for dinner. He, thinking it was impolite to refuse gladly accepted her kindness. While working in the kitchen you couldn't help but look nervously back and forth between the food you were cooking and at your brother and Kuroko talking in the living room. Even during dinner you couldn't help but be anxious, they both haven't said a word and even if they did it wasn't directed to each other. It made you wonder even more about what they were actually talking about in the living room.

"Thank you for the meal, I must be going." Kuroko said as he was finished, he sent a curt nod at your brother's direction and a smile at your mother's way.

"I'll see him to the door." You chimed.

With your mother's approval you slipped out of your seat and walked towards the door and waited for him to finish his farewells. At the door you bid him goodbye and he did as well and before long you were watching his slender form disappear as he round up the corner of the street and into ripples of shadows and darkness. You stepped back inside your humble abode and slumped into the couch next to your brother with a satisfied grunt. The silence ensued for more than a few awkward seconds before he finally spoke up.

"As much as I'd hate to admit it but he's a good guy. It's reassuring to know you have at least one decent suitor."

"He's not interested in me okay?" You scoff but your brother easily returns it with a snarky smirk and a long sip from the cup of tea he held in his free hand. He stops to think then snickers.

"Oh? I beg to differ."
