Description

Third commission of the Christmas season, Lunemyr  for HayleyWolf !

I never really took notice of how gorgeous this guy's design was before - but man, he is absolutely lovely! And that rack, augh -licks it-
His front leg (the one touching the ground) looks a bit odd, but eh xD It's okay, I think. Also his build said medium light, so I made his feetsies and legs a biiiiit thicker than they were in the sketch - but not much. It would seem that I need to learn how to draw thinner male fawnlings to where they don't look like males, haha.

Anyways, I hope you like it Hayley!

That's it... I feel like a broken record.  All I want to do is tell you over and over how much I adore each one of these images.
The anatomy, the poses, that flawless lineart!!! ♥
Question - what do you do to get your lines to look that softer color (not just hard black)?  Do you use multiply?  Do you color over them in a clipping layer?  Or ink in another color?  I'm just curious how you achieve that look.  It's really quite stunning.

<3 Compliments from you mean so much though, because your style was one of the ones that really influenced the way I drew horses and other similarly built styles! It's so unique, and so, so you! I can see a lot of it in your sister's late work as well and my mind just goes "Eep, ReQuay!" It was such an amazing honor when you started watching me!

Ahem but the lines - in earlier years, I tried just using grey lines and setting them to multiply (where it would show the color underneath) but then I came across the problem where the color underneath didn't color all of the space beneath the lines, and I could see bits of the background, and doubling the layer just yeilded a darker grey again (I hope that makes sense, it's hard to explain) xD Either way I didn't like it, so I had to find another way.

Eventually, I just resorted to inking in all black, then coloring my image - then locking the lineart layer and coloring each section of the lines a darker shade of the color it was touching. So like Lune's nose/hoof lines here are a darker shade of the base pink, and the sections of his coat were just darker shades of his actual coat color.

For white sections (like his markings here) I would usually go with just a very, very light color that correlates with the rest of the charas colors (Like for Lune here I would typically use a light cream. For a chara with a pink theme I would use a very light pink, or for a blue theme a very light blue - these colors would be almost near white though, just tinted). Here though, his coat was light enough that I just used the same cream color for the entire thing xD

And then eyes I always just use black, so that they stand out ^^ I usually color the outer iris line a darker color of the iris, but it depends on how I'm feeling ^_^

Phew, sorry for the wall of text haha

OMG - can I just thank you so so so much for typing all of that out!    It's perfect and makes so much sense.

I've had the very same problem when trying to use multiple (with the color underneath not coloring all of the space under the lines).  I gave up on trying that.

But locking the inked layer, with black lines, and coloring a grouped/linked (or whatever they're called) layer makes so much more sense.  It's easy to understand, and nice that you can choose exactly which darker color you want to use to frame the colored areas.  And the tinting ideas for whitish areas is genius.  As well as the tip for the black lining around the eye (making it 'pop').

Thank you so much for that... I'm definitely gonna have to try this on one of my next reference images.

Hehe, I find that it just gives the piece a softer (and sometimes more realistic) effect - being as lines in real life aren't black ^^ Also, on a side note, if you line each element of your piece on a separate layer (for example, hair on one, a shirt on another, etc.) it makes coloring much easier/faster because you don't have to waste time making sure you don't get the wrong color on the wrong edge xD Of course this means you can't use a quick selection tool for coloring your image, but I generally don't do that anyways... so-
Hopefully it works for you!

This is gorgeous!!!! -squeals- You got him spot-on~~ Hehe, most stags out there are all manly, after drawing them that way so much it's hard to get used to making a stag dainty!! XD Thank you so much he looks stunning!!! <3

Omg so his body/build is actually right? Yeeeeeeee -screeches- I'm so glad! Hehe yes, most of the stags I draw are at least medium body build - so finding a balance between his lighter build and plain feminine build was a thin line xD
You're welcome though - thank you for commissioning me, Hayley! <333
