Description The outside cold and pale snow that covered every blade of grass seemed a world away as Michael lay on the soft couch, the fireplace warming his shut eyes. He relaxed into the cushions, listening to his own breathing as he forced out any thoughts that tried to intrude on his peace.

He heard footsteps outside and the clicking of keys as the front door swung open, blowing in the cold before it was cut off by the slam of the door as quickly as it had opened. An exhale of breath, the shuffling of shoes. And finally his own grunt as a body collapsed onto him. Michael opened his eyes, squinting at Gavin’s dumb face that was inches from his.

“Hi Michael,” he greeted, kissing his nose.

“Gavin, get your fat ass off of me,” he mumbled. “It was so fuckin’ quiet and nice when you were out.” Michael paused, quirking an eyebrow. “Why did you come back? I thought you were going to Burnie’s New Year’s party?”

Gavin beamed. “I did! But I didn’t want you to be all by yourself on New Year’s.” He smiled warmly, those big blue eyes of his shining from the fire. Michael tried to pretend to be angry but he quickly gave up and shifted his laying position to be more comfortable. Gavin chuckled, pleased, and cuddled into the other.

“God, you’re freezing,” Michael hissed when Gavin’s hand brushed his arm.

The British man suddenly grew a mischievous glint in his eye as he bellowed, “Oh, Michael, I love you so much!” and pressed his hands into Michael’s cheeks. The ginger cursed, struggling to move his face away.

“Fuckin’ shit, dude!” he laughed, shoving lightly at the other. Gavin snickered, leaning forward and pushing his nose into the side of Michael’s face while kissing his cheek.

“Is my nose cold too?”

“Yes, Jesus, stop before I push you off!”

“But, Michael!”

Loud cracks of fireworks interrupted them, causing them to be still and listen as there was distant cheering. Gavin looked over at the wall clock before turning back to his boy.

“It’s New Year’s, Michael,” he whispered. Michael smiled.

“Happy New Year’s, Gavin,” he murmured, leaning forward and kissing the other lightly. “Thanks for coming back.” The two pressed their foreheads together, Gavin shutting his eyes and relaxing into Michael’s arms. They lay together, tangled in their own limbs, listening to each other’s breathing and waiting until the fireworks stopped for their second kiss.
