Description
Starfleet Medical is a branch of Starfleet dedicated to the medical needs of its personnel and biomedical research. Based out of San Francisco on Earth, Starfleet Medical oversaw all Starfleet medical personnel and facilities.

In modern medical practice and public health care, coordination of effort is the keystone. It is therefore not surprising, that the federation Starfleet maintains a fleet of medical and hospital ships. Next to the military and scientific fleets (which sometimes merge smoothly), the Medical Fleet is Starfleet's third largest operation. In addition to ship classes clearly designed as hospital ships, such as the Olympic or Naucrate classes, Starfleet has converted a number of its modular convertible ships such as the Miranda, Oberth or the Nebula class into hospital ships. At least one Galaxy class ship is converted to a medical variation getting the upgrades from the Galaxy-X refit program, but with an large Hospital pod instead of an third warp nacelle.

Starfleet Medical maintained many diagnostic and treatment wards, utilizing the most advanced technologies in the Federation. Long-term facilities were available to care for seriously ill patients.
It was also responsible for all medical research activities in the Federation. Researchers were required to obtain approval from Starfleet Medical before proceeding with new treatments and medications.
Starfleet Medical was also responsible for the regulation and training of the various counselors in Starfleet.

Typically, it is Starfleet Medical that is called upon when there are major outbreaks of disease or natural disasters within the Federation that can result in planet-wide epidemics or large numbers of casualties. In order to operate as independently as possible, the medical fleet has a large number of ships designed with modules or separable areas to set up on-site (or in orbit) field hospitals or quarantine stations.
