Description Just wanted to try out Dave's new model, the USS Discovery.

For sure, the ship class isnt a beauty, especially in comparison to the USS Shenzhou which will also shown in the new show.
But i must say i really like the aspect, that CBS used an old Enterprise concept from the Phase 2 Era. This gives me at least a little bit hope, that someone at CBS Studios respect the old Trek. I give Discovery a fair chance. All we need are good stories, real stories, deep stories then i can live with a reimagined design and even with a junkpile of ship. I mean, in first the Space Station Deep Space Nine was also named ugly. And we get 7 wonderful season with her...

The design of Discovery was very odd to me, regardless of the CGI and its 'abilities'. The vessel seems like a massive step backwards in ship design when you try to picture something that is only 10 years away from TOS. Maybe i am too hardcore fan, but Discovery is not canon to me.Β

Yeah, what can one await from a concept, that was declined back in the 70s. It was a bad design back then, and it is still a bad design.

But i can live with a bad ship design if at least the stories would be a bit better. First Season of Disco was a shame to watch. There is not a single character i can sympathize with.

I never disliked the design (a ship doesnt have to be a beauty) but the CGI stuff in Discovery in general is a kind of a disappointment for me. I wish we could see some clearer scenes of the ships like we saw in Deep Space NIne and such.

hm that was a scrap idea for the enterprise design, and what startrek was supposed to be, but got rejected.

it a darker story untold that was supposed to be the original concept of startrek.

It his explain in startrek art book why they when for a other aspect in the Original.

So now you know it was to be the enterprise but was rejected.

I love this ship. Maybe more than all the others. I think I saw a shot of the ship where there was no holes in the center, Just dark panels along an inset channel.

Yes, the closed center version was the first tests from CBS/Paramount they use in the Teaser Trailer for the 50th Anniversary of Star Trek. Later they decide to stretch the warp engines and cut out the saucer section.

Deep Space Nine IS still ugly. But it's supposed to be an old cardassian refinery AND occupation base of Bajor so it must be ugly ^^

Yep, she is. But we got 7 wonderful years with it. DS9 had great stories during their time. So i dont really care if we have a ugly hero ship. A ship is a ship

Everything in the ship's design screams Destroyer to me - she's long, sleek, low-slung and just looks deadly. Science ship, sure, but she can handle herself.

Very nice, good Discovery art to get me hyped for the show. I do like the angle you chose, makes it look powerful as you view all the details.
I don't mind the design myself and I don't see why people are so against it.Β The Klingon-esque design and sharp edges do have a place with this series being set in wartime with them, maybe Star Fleet engineers took cues from the Klingons about building warships since they had so little to go on themselves.
In that context it makes sense it doesn't resemble a typical starfleet ship if it's designed for combat, just look at the Defiant or Prometheus. Then again maybe I'm just a bit tired of people deeming any ship that isn't a carbon copy of the Constitution classΒ heresy.

Yeah, the story is what's important not the ship.
I'm also hoping for a good soundtrack to the series, some of the early themes in TNG were great but after that the music in Trek became kinda lacklustre.

I like the music in Deep Space Nine. Some of them were a fresh style to the Star Trek Soundtracks. A bit darker.

MoRoom [2017-08-12 13:33:32 +0000 UTC]

Awsome. Actually I don't think the ship's overall look is that bad, it's just a bit untypical for a starfleet ship

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Euderion In reply to MoRoom [2017-08-13 11:25:16 +0000 UTC]

Shes for sure not a beauty. Its hard to find an angle which represents her in a good way. I think the biggest problem is the triangle shape of the engine section. That is so not starfleet typical design.
I cant wait to see, what CBS made out of it, and how they show us the ship.

Yeah, its ugly as hell, but i can live with it. Deep Space Nine also was a junkpile, and dont let me start on the Voyager... But both shows survived for each seven years. So why not? If the stories are good.

Nhlaqgor In reply to Euderion [2017-08-12 14:29:16 +0000 UTC]

That's true, but it wouldn't have hurt if DS9 and Voy would have had a more pleasant appearance.

Halpthiuian In reply to Nhlaqgor [2017-08-12 22:23:52 +0000 UTC]

I don't know what voyager's excuse is. But we do need to remember that DS9 was actually inherited from an alien race with a decidedly unpleasant design philosophy.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Nhlaqgor In reply to Halpthiuian [2017-08-12 22:51:00 +0000 UTC]

That's true.
The production design could have been much more unpleasant. I actully think they did a good compromise with the design of the Station (altough they should have made it MUCH bigger.)

About Voyager, i don't think the intrepid looks that bad. It fits to the general design philosophy following TNG quite well imho.
What bothers me much MUCH more is the looks of the Sovereign class, but i guess that's another topic.
Regarding Voyager, i'd actually had preferred it if they would have used a old Excelsior/Cheyenne or Ambassador Class. But i think the Producers just wanted a new shiny toy (that's faster than the one from the previous series, of courseΒ  Β  ).

When i heard, that one producer said, we orientated on Game of Thrones and Walking Dead, i think they mean the killing people thing. So its possible, Discovery will loose the one or another main character during the first season.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Nhlaqgor In reply to Euderion [2017-08-12 14:28:27 +0000 UTC]

I'm ok with killing off characters, that's not what i meant. (TNG did this in its second season too)
If it's done more tastefully i'll be open for it. (again, like TNG did, back then)

What i previously meant was HOW it is done.
If they go for brutal shock effects (Story wise and visualy), nudity and everyone fucking around (literary) like GoT does, i'll be off instantly.

Cylor In reply to Nhlaqgor [2017-08-14 17:45:55 +0000 UTC]

From what I've read, there are a lot of indications that the show is going to be extremely political...something which I sadly suspect will take priority over "telling good stories". Β

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 2

Nhlaqgor In reply to Cylor [2017-08-15 07:10:22 +0000 UTC]

Well in a certain sense, some of Star Trek best episodes where of political nature:
(which depends on what how you define a political episode)
TNG 2x09 The Measure Of A Man
TNG 4x21 The Drumhead
TNG 3x10 The defector
DS9 6x19 In the Pale Moonlight

Although there are many more "political" episodes, these are the ones i like the most.
(Or are considered by many fans as "good"Β  like the DS9 one, which i personally dislike.)

Of course there where many Klingon political episodes, i personally found not that interesting tbh. But each to their own.

So i wouldn't say that political isn't good per se, it all depends on how it is done, and what the message is.
(thats why i really dislike DS9 6x19 so much)

Sorry for the double post.
