Ashleigh and Ethan had prepared for this day for a long time. They spent many months training in rain or shine to get themselves to the grand prix level. At their last show Ethan had excelled in their free jump class placing third his first time free jumping outside. Now they came even more prepared. Ash had spent many hours getting Ethan used to all kinds of sounds and smells, distractions that came with jumping outside. Today they were both shined and polished. Ethan's golden coat glimmered in the sunlight and Ashleigh was wearing her best show cloths and had her blonde hair tucked under her helmet.
"Ok boy, are you ready for this?" Ash asked her beautiful horse.
The big horse nickered at her reassuringly and nudged her gently with his nose. She gave Ethan a smile and hoped up on a block to mount the stallion. Ethan stood patiently as Ash gathered herself and then they set off towards the warm up ring.
The two of them trotted around for a few minutes before picking up a smooth canter. The familiarity of riding Ethan finally had Ashleigh relaxing as she sank into her seat and enjoyed the feel of his powerful stride. She let out a breath and lightly pulled him up. Nodding towards the barns stable hands the girl jogged across the arena to one of the jumps. She set it to a reasonable height and Ash and Ethan picked up a slow canter. The pair turned towards the jump and easily cleared up.
"Put it up a few holes and make it an oxer. I don't think he's even trying." Ashleigh called to the stable hand.
The jump was raised and again they turned towards it. Ethan's head came up a touch at the sight of the jump and he snorted excitedly. This is what he lived for. Gracefully the big stallion pulled up his knees and soared over the jump. Ash let out a light laugh at the joy of riding a horse like this. They jumped a couple more times until she felt they were ready. After they headed towards the arena to watch some of the competitors going before them. A couple of the horse were having trouble with the first combination. It was a wide triple bar leading into a long 1 stride before coming out over a vertical. Lots of the horses seemed to be getting too flat after the triple and stretching for that 1 and they were knocking the vertical down.
"We're gonna have to keep ourselves together for that one." Ashleigh muttered "I think we might be ok though, you've got a fairly long stride. We should be good, just gotta keep our heads about us."
Just after she finished talking the other palomino in the field came out of the ring. They were up.
Ashleigh took a deep breath and urged Ethan into the arena. They walked out in the ring and looked over the big jumps. Ethan picked up a trot while they waited for the whistle, just now starting to get some nerves. The whistle rang out across the arena and they pair picked up a quick rocking canter and came round to the first jump. Easily they popped over the purple vertical and settled into a rhythm. The second jump was a wide oxer that Ethan gracefully jumped over. They continued around the course and quickly came to the first combination, the troublesome one. Ethan stretched over the triple bar before taking stride and putting his effort into pushing away from the ground to clear the vertical. As Ashleigh had predicted Ethan's long stride made it easy for them to cover the ground between the two jumps. The rest of the jumps came easy. They hopped over oxers and verticals like they weren't even there, Ethans muscles powerfully carrying them over the course. They turned into the triple combo and Ash carefully regulated Ethan stride to get through the first part before letting him pick his spot for the second. A couple jumps later and they were heading toward the finish. Ethan stretched into a gallop heading for #13, his long legs easily eating up the ground. They approached the jump and he tensed his muscles before pushing off the ground and easily soaring over the last jump heading for the finish.
Ashleigh let out a long whoop as they raced across the finish line. Clear and fast, all their hard work paid off.
