Funny, I have never seen anyone work in kitchen sink before. Tell me, how did you come across this medium and what are the most effective techniques to bring out its strengths?
Cheap wit aside...
I am in love with this piece! It captures the very energy and emotion I look for in equine art. The horse is one of the most physically powerful and powerfully emotional animals on Earth, and that essence is perfectly rendered here! It is difficult enough to simply draw or paint a credible likeness of the horse, but to have painted its spirit simultaneously elevates "Against the Rain" above the mere craft or conservative and predictable illustration that comprises too much of equine art these days. This is truly fine art! I am deeply impressed.
The title adds even more depth to what is already a profound piece. Looking beyond the image of the horse, I see this as a painting of the struggles we as individuals must overcome in our lives, and the sheer power of will it often requires. This piece is motivational in more ways than one to me. Your art in general inspires me to continue striving for higher ground, but more importantly to me, this motivates me to look at my own life, and tackle the things that are holding me under. All of us have times when we must run against the rain, and the energy this piece exudes charges me with the courage and drive to face the personal tempest that is battering me currently. That being said, I am logging off the computer now to face the most immediate challenges.
Thank you!

Oh, thank you, you've brought me to tears. This is the nicest letter I've ever received and you explain so well WHY the piece works! I am grateful to you.
Your comment regarding kitchen sink art was very funny! All you need is a kitchen sink and a whole lot of paper, pens, paints, pastels, brushs, canvas, a few pain killers, dramamine, a lot of Monster Energy Beverage, charcoal, a cat is good, a horse in the backyard, better, barbecue sauce, spray bottle, plastic wrap and um, oh. Water

Hmmm. Could be, I did this last year, and don't remember what source material I used. I borrowed from all kinds of things before I strted taking my own photos.

The modelling of the horseβs form is quite exceptional in this, the sense of depth and mass β itβs a very convincing rendering of a horse. I love too the variety of marks youβve created, itβs such an interesting image with all the subtle hatching and glazing and motley of colours. Youβve handled the various media very impressively.
Thereβs a lot of dynamism too, a lovely sense of movement. However this is the only area where Iβd criticise it, the front legs seem peculiar to me, something to do with their length or position or perspective makes them look slightly clumsy. I think perhaps it might be to do with the front leg closest to us, it might be too short in comparison to its counterpart, or maybe it should be bending back rather then outsretched. Not quite sure exactly but itβs damaging for me the feel of the horseβs movement. Other then that though I really like this.

Beautiful, he looks like he's ready to leap off the page from fantasy to reality. Ever think about illustrating?

Ah, well, here's the rub. I used to be a graphic artist, years ago, and I illustrated wonderful things like bed pans and door knobs :sigh: I got very burned out with the insane hours and learned a great lesson. I HATE drawing on demand. Now its like pulling teeth If I'm obligated to someone for a certain kind of image or peice in general. Neurotic? Yes, but all mine!

Well thank you! I submitted it originally to half-halt press . . . and they liked it, but wern't publishing "that kind" of book at this time. Unfortunately at that point I moved and didn't pursue it further. I wrote a column, for riders for an Illinois publication called "The Libertyville Sentinel". The column was called "The Inner Rider Workshop" and it ran for 7 years. They are on line and you could if you wished have them send you back additions of the articles.

Happy to be anyone's muse. It would sell, there's more than enough "how to" and "ain't we pretty" books out there on horses. Maybe the equestrian world is ready for a lover's book on horses.

Why thank you! I like that the horse is running away from the light and into darkness. I think it adds a *hidden* undercurrent.
