I like the way you've kept enough detail in the snow to keep it an interesting part of the composition. One thing I hate about my own photographs is my lack of ability to keep highlight detail while exposing properly for mid-tones. I'l keep trying.

Just as an aside, to someone who's seen snow once in his life, it looks like sugar, or salt. Pity you can't convey temperature, isn't it? (not even a 5D can do that *laughs* )

Thanks very much Craig. This image is actually over exposed in order to get the snow to be white. +1/2 stop in the camera then another +1/2 stop in LR. I then toned down some of the highlights on the reflecting leaf surface by using the burn tool in PSE7.

How cold was it? Single digits ~8F. When it is really cold, the snow is very fine grain. When temps are closer to the freezing mark, snow flakes can be a big as corn flakes.

Wow, snow photography IS hard work! I understand the need for over-exposure - light metering hasn't changed insofar as it always try to average to 18% grey, which is not very useful for snow ... You really worked hard to get that result, and it's good to know - helps me appreciate it all the more. I always have trouble with the burn tool ... give me an enlarger, and I'm not too bad, but electronically, I'm hopeless.

I didn't realise that about snow - more interesting information with which to amaze my friends and family
