Description On the morning of October 29, 1948, L&N M1 2-8-4 Berkshire #1989 leads a fast freight from Birmingham AL to Louisville KY at Big Creek KY. The Freight is loaded with various types of freight, too many to count, all heading for Louisville. The M1's, also known as Big Emma's, were built by Baldwin Locomotive Works between 1942-1949 for use during WWII & after that to all Heavy trains on the Railroad. The locomotives had a boiler pressure of 265 lb. & a Tractive Effort of 65,290 lbs. & 79,390 lbs. with the booster. Although these locomotives were used for Fast freights & Coal Drags, they also served on L&N's passenger trains such as the Flamingo & the South Wind. Unfortunately, by the time these locomotives were delivered, The Railroad was starting to dieselized, which put many out of service starting in December 1950 & the last being withdrawn in November of 1956. Sadly, of the 42 locomotives built, not a single one was preserved. All were scrapped, however, 7 of the Big Emma's Tenders were reused for MOW service. 5 Tenders were converted into Auxiliary Water Tenders for the Southern Steam Program & used behind Texas & Pacific I1 2-10-4 #610, Canadian Pacific Royal Hudson #2839, & Chesapeake & Ohio K4 Kanawha #2716. 2 of those Auxiliary tenders have been preserved both the Southeastern Railway Museum in Duluth GA & the Kentucky Railway Museum in New Haven KY. So at least, half of the Big Emma's (their tenders) are still around.
