Description
On the morning of June 23, 1997, we're on UP's former D&RGW Mainline outside of Pueblo CO to chase the Living Legend herself, UP FEF-3 #844 on the 1997 NRHS Convention Special from Denver CO to Salt Lake City UT where the convention was held. Soon, we caught the 844 & her train racing along the former Rio Grande while being assisted by UP Heritage Fleet's E9 Units heading for Utah's Capitol City. The day before, the 844 & her consist traveled over the soon to be closed Tennessee Pass & Royal Gorge Line which was in the process of being mothballed as a through route. That part of the trip was the most famous stretch of the excursion to Salt Lake City. This would the 844's only time through Tennessee Pass & the Royal Gorge. The train would arrive in Salt Lake City that evening, where the NRHS Convention of the year would begin.
