Description
She longed for escape. She was convinced that there was nothing for her where she was.
Searching around the room, she picked up a few books, and placed them on a cloth in the middle of the room.
Everything in her life felt grievously wrong. She wasn't even sure what her purpose was anymore.
Needle and spools of thread, measuring tape, scraps of old clothing. She placed them along with the books on the cloth.
She fought herself for months before this point. One moment she would feel like the world was before her, the next like she was condemned to stay in her house forever. Her life felt like it was dead and rotting, something stagnant, and everything inside her screamed for something dynamic, something filled with life.
She filled a small drawstring bag with some essentials, her laptop and charger, 2 glasses cases, and a roll of duct tape. Pulling the strings as hard as she could, she placed it to lean on the books. Standing up again while staring at the pile, she thought for a minute, bent over, and put the needle and spools of thread in the bag and surrounded the bag with the scraps of clothing.
She remembered what it was like to feel like she had some control over her life, to live freely. She felt like all she was doing then was watching time pass her. She passed from depression to aggravation to wistfulness to loneliness. She tried to get her thoughts out, but it was like there was a stop on her muse. Stress pushed down on her shoulders all the time when it seemed like nothing happened with her at all on the outside.
She stood up and inspected the pile one last time. She folded up the cloth to surround the items like a sack, and then lifted the load and dropped it gently into a thick laundry bag. She looked around the room one last time. Picking up her wallet, she looked in to make sure she had money. Taking out her debit card, she slipped her wallet inside her pocket. Picking up her cell phone as well as an index card it was lying on, she picked up the laundry bag and walked downstairs. Her dad was sitting in the living room, watching CNN.
"Hi Dad."
His head turned to see her still standing on the stairs, staring at him. "Oh, hello." He turned the volume of the TV a little lower. "Are you going to do some laundry?"
"Yep."
"Um, can you take the load in the washer and put in the dryer then? I was washing some things but I am having some difficulty walking down the stairs."
She smirked slightly. He was always having aches and pains, the poor man. "Sure thing, Dad."
He turned back around and turned the volume back up. She passed the kitchen table and placed her debit card and phone at the edge. Laying the index card next to them, she pulled a pen from her pocket and wrote "I'll be back." Signing it, she laid the pen down next to the paper and went down the stairs to the basement. She only had a little time.
She dropped the bag in the den and ran over to the laundry room to transfer the clothes from the washer to the dryer. Finishing as fast as possible, she went into the guest room and pulled out a soft luggage bag, already filled with some clothing. She transferred the items from the laundry bag to the luggage bag and pushed everything in to fit. She wondered how her family would react; they would probably try to find her, but that's why she left her debit card and phone, and she knew her computer didn't have a tracking program. She wondered how they would react when she came back. She hoped they would understand, but most of her doubted they would.
Pulling out the drawstring bag, she slung it on her back and zipped the luggage bag closed. Picking it up and saying a prayer, she walked softly to the basement exit. Wrestling with the locks that were almost rusted shut, she wondered what would happen if she couldn't get out... The thought didn't last long, because the locks finally gave and opened with a loud click. Holding her breath, she slowly opened the door. Sunlight streamed through the cracks until it flooded the doorway. She paused as she looked out to the horizon. This could seriously backfire, she thought. Something could go completely wrong, and then what? She turned to open a pocket of her luggage bag and pulled out a round trip bus ticket. No, this was something she had to do. She couldn't stay like this anymore. She needed to take a chance, find her happiness again. Sighing... then taking a breath... then checking to see if she had all her bags... she looked out again unto the endless horizon, and walked to the other side of the doorway, shutting the door. No turning back. Feeling the sun on her face and breathing fresh air, she felt a rush of excitement go though her. With a new-found zeal, she walked towards the light, into the world and her new adventure.
