So, when shading it's best to have a predetermined light source so you have an idea of what should be shaded. Shade what's blocked by from the light( no duh, your not stupid). Also take into account how bright the light is. I'm guilty of breaking this rule sometimes, and I can get carried away. But mostly, stick to this rule! Another thing is, that how something is shaded depends on the material. Something shiny may have defined lines were something matte will be more gradient.
