He ain't exactly the romantic type. Which is why Sylvain gets really contemptuous of the display of affection between couples on this particular day, exchanging kisses and eating chocolate, all that good stuff. He doesn't believe in real love, only the physical form of it which manifests in the sadistic way he treats Alaire when he firsts kidnaps him. In other words, he's more of a, "Bitch let's have sex on the couch right now" sort of guy.

Alaire on the other hand is a firm believer in love. Even though he's initially scared to death of Sylvain, he eventually finds the man's true personality beneath his cruel, hedonistic exterior. And it's his sweet, forgiving nature that makes Sylvain start to open up more to his real feelings for him.
