Description The Library Fight
Torg Eternity: Aysle
Copic marker and colored pencil on paper with digital enhancement
© Ulisses Spiel
2019

Another piece for the Aysle boxed set for Torg Eternity, released as a preview by Ulisses Spiel North America.  This one is an homage to the cover of the original TORG magic sourcebook, Pixaud's Practical Grimoire by Dave Dorman.  When I saw that the assignment featured mage-killers, the same creatures as on the cover of that book, I just had to do a tip of the hat to the original game.

It's very powerful?  Did I translate that right?  I assume you mean the art.  If so, merci beaucoup!

As the author of this adventure, I absolutely adore this piece. Seeing the 2nd mage-killer above Viola makes me suddenly remember seeing Dorman's full image, which also had a 2nd mage-killer (unlike the cropped version that ended up on the cover of Pixaud's) – or, at least I think I remember that! It's been 30 years so I'm not 100% sure. Either way, amazing. Thank you.

The second mage-killer is on the back cover of Pixaud's (I referenced the actual book while working up this piece).  I've never actually seen the complete painting and can't find it online, but it's obvious where the second creature goes in the composition.  It's shame it's not available as it's one of my favorite Dorman pieces and I'd love to see it complete.  I made up the wizard in that piece as a character back when I was playing original TORG in the 90's: Pixauna, the some-odd-great-grandaughter of Pixaud himself.  It was good times.

Anyway, I'm glad you like the piece.  It was an absolute joy to draw.  Torg is really near and dear to my heart.  Thanks for including mage-killers in your adventure.  I'm really looking forward to playing it!

The back cover, ah that's right. I knew I'd seen it someplace.

Mage-killers were always a personal favorite of mine, as well. They're a unique threat in a world where magic is usually an advantage. I had to squeeze them in.

Well, as a long-time fan of the setting, I certainly appreciate it!  It's always fun to see nods to the original crop up in the reboot.  I'm keeping my fingers crossed for a return of Conjure the Hordes of Bouncing Doom.  :-D

If previous fictions have taught me anything, its that a fight in the library is always top tier serious. I think this awesome piece captures that notion well!

Grimoire library + mage-killers = bad news.

Thanks.  She's usually depicted in a pair of large, green, sci-fi glasses, but I really wanted to feature her expression so I removed them.  I wanted her to express a feeling of angry panic, and you really needed to see her eyes for that.
