You see me. You no see me. You see me. You no see me...You don't see it animated ? Use Firefox, Opera or this plugin for chrome.
Since I play SWTOR, I wanted to do artworks of my characters but I didn't find a way to do it properly. I started with a gif but the quality was awful.
So, some days ago, I was looking for an alternative to gif and I found this : APNG . This is really great: quality of png and possibility for an animation. And bigger : it's still a .png. So people who use an unsupported browser can still see something!
On the other hand, the file is pretty heavy. It's the price for quality :-/
Poser -> Photoshop -> Japng

I'm looking into Poser. (For a animated web-series.) What are your opinions on it? It obviously worked pretty well to create this. Good job, good job indeed.

I haven't tried any other software than Poser, but it is really good for animation. I think it has almost everything for this purpose. On the other hand, it's very complex and it takes a loooooooot of time, even for a small animation (I started a combat scene and it took me 10 hours for 8 seconds of movie with 2 characters T_T ). Unfortunately, I don't think there is any less complex software.
Also, without motion capture files, it's difficult to make an animation that's look totally real (a lot of reference is necessary).
So: animation for 3D movies is difficult (I know, it's obvious) but Poser does a really great job.
