I have to say I absolutely adore the fox himself, the level of detail, the meticulous outline, the amazing expression on his face, the warm colors, the texture of the fur. However the background looks lazily done compared to the fox. I can see having the background misty and the fox in focus, that makes artistic sense of a sort (kind of painting imitating photography) but the background seems hasty & incomplete as well as misty, particularly the brown splotches under the trees. And the leaf just jars me because it should be the same focus level as the fox, and it's the same color (ish) as the fox-- but it isn't outlined in black the way the fox is. That makes the fox & the leaf look weirdly disjointed. If the leaf had black outlining like the fox it would match the fox & appear to belong in the context of the same painting. However overall it is gorgeous and I really like it. I am your watcher because I adore the detail in which you depict animals and the exuberance of your color & flowing style. And overall, this painting is a good example of htat.

First of all thank you for taking the time to compose a critique, it's much appreciated and a rare treat! I thought about doing more with the background, but frankly I was scared I'd end up ruining it. There was also as you put it a "lazy" aspect to knowing in the back of my head I was just doing it for fun, no way to win a site wide contest and how much time I wanted to expend taking away from commission work and my son. Not a very classy excuse but it is what it is, I've always been more interested in figure than backgrounds, like many artists around! ^_^; You are SO right about the leaf outline, and for some reason i KNEW it was off but i couldn't figure out why, freaking ink outline of course! lol
