*edit* why am I bumping this again? I did a few adjustments, the background was too bright and was smothering the character so i dulled it down a bit
Also I realized that for all the blue highlights in the white fur there were none in the grey so I added some in All done!
I originally drew this smilodon to be a version of Misty my silver fox fursona as different animals so I thought I should follow through and color her as such. I'm looking for advanced critiquing here, I'm really trying to improve my digital work!

coloring is great...but...i think the background makes her blend in a little to much. something a bit less cluttered? or make it not as bright maybe. overall great effect though!
as for the layers thing....just try a simple image with a few layers, and bulid on that. you can get some super effects with layers, that are overly complicated to do with no layers (in like a click!)

just slap a layer of black over it and set it to about 20~30% occupancy and that should cut it down. (of course erase it over her.)

Yeah the fur may be grey and white but the undertone for Misty is blue, so I implemented it here too

do not use layers?! 
I use the Photoshop and I make shadows and light on different layers. Each shade for each layer.
