Description DON'T FAVE UNLESS YOU'RE GOING TO READ MY COMMENT.

I'm very torn about posting my tiger pictures from Bush Gardens. You see the public has been horribly misled about "white tigers" and although they are beautiful they are also horribly inbred disrespectfully marketed examples of how man kind cares just a little bit more about money than it does about actual conservation of species. A white tiger is a bengal tiger with a resessive gene called leucism, or lack of pigment and is extremely rare, in fact every white tiger in the united states today is related and inbred together. Want to know more? Big cat Rescue has an excellent page on the history of the "Royal White Tiger" [link]

I chose in the end to share these because they are beautiful pictures and the animals themselves did nothing but be born, but as always I felt the need to educate in addition to the visual sharing.

People that inbreed are evil. Some issues in dogs, like apparently some purebreds are never really healthy and need help to get pregnant and give birth.

Indeed. Bulldogs aren't even cute imo c.c they are suseptable to so many diseases. And they are one breed that needs help making puppies.

I adopted a pug last year, she was very sweet but also one of the dumbest dogs I have ever owned lol! Β And my GOD I had four cats and she shed more than all of them combined- stinky floaty little blonde hairs. Β She started knocking my son down constantly and he bounced the back of his head on tile several times so we gave her to a friend who had just lost her 16 year old pug, happy ending for all of us. Β But no more squishy purebreds for me, our doxy impacted his spine and was crippled the last two years of his life too! Β

Aww sounds like our toy poodle. He was beaten as a puppy and given NO shots. And he got arthritis, he was also stupid. Especially after getting hit by a truck. He never ate properly or drank was always constipated and only had 5 teeth left, only two of which aligned so he could chew. I know poodles have bad teeth but his breeder was a jerk. We got him from the animal shelter. He wasn't so bad even with kids at least.

Awe! Β lol Poor guy lol. Β I have seen poodles lose a few teeth with old age, but I think blindness is much more common to the breed. Β Give him some off limits table scrap for me ^_^

He passed away sadly...he went senile. He was completely deaf too. Not blind though.

It's a shame that instead of helping them in the wild people waste time inbreeding the white ones in captivity

I agree with your comment. That's why white tigers aren't used in SSP breeding programs.

It's another wonderful photo!

Her name's Lanie.

Oh wow I swore both whites were male! Very interesting thank you! Also: perhaps you would know since you clearly have experience with this conservation dept someone mentioned how skinny they are recently, I told her that it could be digestion issues like I know the white at Big cat rescue Zabu has severe digestion issues as a birth defect form being inbred.. Or are they not ill and simply the rare occurance of being pure Bengal and tropical instead of fluffy siberian crosses as most of the whites are now?

They have four white tigers total now, three female and one male. There used to be three white males (King, Nepal, and Havar Jones) but Nepal passed away over a year ago and Havar went to another zoo because he couldn't go on exhibit with anyone (they weren't introduced to each other young enough). King is on exhibit with his sister, Lanie (the cross-eyed female). Charisse, another white female is on exhibit with Jafari and Khana. Khana is also a white female.

Sorry I didn't see the other part of the post earlier.

The tigers at BG are definitely fed enough. I've helped to weigh out meat before....there's a lot there. The tigers are given enrichment (chicken, rabbits, bones, etc.) along with their diet of other meat. The ones who need supplements get them. They get the best veterinary care available.

As for Zabu, isn't she a liger? If not, she's larger than the average tiger (width-wise, anyways).

Hmm I apologize if I responded to this post already, I just noticed on my deviation it appears as if I have not. Zabu as far as I know, is a bengal/siberian hybrid as are many of the white tigers today. Her mate is a lion and when she was rescued the breeder was trying to breed them. The biggest (no pun intended) problem with ligers is that most of them have no built in ability to "stop growing" at a certain size, so they not only become bigger than either species but it is likely they die as if they had giantism.

BCR did just rescue Freckles who seems to be stabilized at a certain size so it's a good thing they got her; so she can not be exploited like so many of her bretheren.

Poor white tigers. There is many suffering from all these birth defects caused by inbreeding
Aw i can see the crossed eyes on your photo.
White tigers only exist, because some people are capitalistic idiots, which see only the money... .
You made a nice photo.

I agree with most of the commenting here. I always have mixed feelings about white tigers; they are beautiful, they do encourage people to take an interest in conservation just because they are so beautiful, but they are rarely (if ever) bred ethically.

Personally, I would hate to see these beautiful animals become genetically "extinct." I do believe that they can be bred without so much genetic depression by bringing in more unrelated animals into their genepool. However, that's unlikely to happen, since the birth rate of white tigers compared to orange would decrease dramatically. And, you know, that might cut into someone's profits.

It's a shame that this mutation didn't crop up among the more northerly subspecies like the Amur tiger instead of the tropical Bengal tiger! It might have actually perpetuated itself in the wild had that happened.

I bet you'll love my Big cat Rescue photos I still need to upload this week... they have tons of "tigers born the wrong color" IE oranges... they actually DO bring in new genes but the issue I have with that is that the "excess product" end up as high end steaks, canned hunting, and private owners who have no business owning an exotic wild animal. Some of the stories are absolutely baffling, I'll make sure to include them with each pic.

I always have mixed feelings about them, as well. They are beautiful, but it is terrible to breed them. I do appreciate places that rescue them from unethical breeders, which is what a zoo in my area did; they also committed to not breeding the two they rescued...

But thanks for sharing your pictures; they are beautiful!

Thanks for reading, and commenting! It never fails to amaze me how few people really understand that they aren't their own endangered breed.... so many places fight over having one while the Caspien tiger is assumed extinct in the wild now.

Do you see how they are cross eyed? That's one of the effects of the dormant gene that makes them have less pigment. But yes, they are beautiful... it's just so sad that people think they are "snow tigers" and a seperate species >_>;

Yeah, it's such a shame. All the times I've gone to a zoo I always like to see them and it's kinda obvious that they are bengal tigers. << Seriously, such beautiful animals.
