Melanite was once a home world gem, they functioned as a technician, when the war between the crystal gems and home world occurred Melanite was sent as an engineer to earth. With the war ending in such a hasty retreat Melanite was left behind on the battlefield. Left behind they collected gems too damaged to reform on their own. Unfortunately they were unable to help the majority of them due to them having no healing abilities. The lack of being able to help made Melanite develop a deep sense of bitterness towards themselves. They never cracked or were forced to go into a reformation and so they design they have is still the one held by home world.
