Well, I'll try to explain without giving ANY spoilers. The main character is named Allen Walker. There is a substance that can be used by some people, called Innocence (it can "join" a person's body or be turned into a weapon that only their owners can use). In Allen's case, he is what is called "parasitic" (meaning the Innocence is in his body, in the case, one of his arms).
This weapon is used against akumas and the Noah Clan. The leader of this clan is a man called the "Millennium Earl" and is the one who creates akumas. While the word means "demon" in japanese, they are actually killing machines: When a person dies, the Earl approaches someone who is grieving and taken by his/her sorrow and offers to bring the deceased back to live -for only the person who loved them can call the soul back from the dead-. However, he traps this soul in a sort of "skeleton" and from now on, this soul belongs to him and is controlled by his will, becoming now an "akuma" who cannot disobey his orders. Then, the akuma kills the person who called him/her soul and "wears" the skin to disguise as a human.
While this happens, the soul's torment (as they are VERY MUCH AWARE of what is going on around them) is used as "fuel" to the akuma, which evolves as it kills.
The goal of the Earl and his family is to exterminate all mankind and Allen, who along with his friends are members of the Black Order, hunt akumas and fight against the Noah Clan to save mankind.
NOT the best explanation, but I tried to give just a very brief idea to not give away spoilers. Check it out, because it's a really good manga! The characters are great!
