I keep seeing the tapestry in different fan art and remember seeing it in the Archie sonic comic too. Is this a reference from a sonic game? If so, which one? But now as I think about it, maybe it's a reference (back then foreshadowing) to the Archie sonic genesis story arc?

I think its a reference to sonic & knuckles or sonic the hedgehog 3 and knuckles.Their first fight ever wich took place in hidden palace.

dude, this is my favorite out of all the sonic games
that's my childhood right there
i loved how that game's story progressed with no words ever spoken
the music conveyed everything in that game
i loved how dramatic it was when you passed lava reef act 1, with the music very upbeat and aggressive, and then became more downtempo and melancholy, the fire gone and everything turned to ice
knuckles being sonic's enemy, and then being double-crossed by doctor robotnik, learning that sonic was on the right side all along

i donΒ΄t think everybody will hate you, a lot of people prefer the old sonic, i like the new and the old because i like HIM, is whole general concept, and not how it looks. I just portrayed him like that to add fresh air to the old scene. I confess that i prefer to portray him in a personal style that includes the new design cause i like it. And i have the right to choose what i want to draw
