No idea.
Some say they're the males, other say they're the styage before becoming a queen and then there's probably others who say something completely different.
For me, all the xenomorph are genderless and there's no such thing as mating or breeding. They only use the eggs that are produced by the queen.
I consider the queen itself a mere 'tool' and the central point in the hive's 'reproduction' and survival.
I also tag along with the theory that some of the Praetorians are the guardians of the queen and the hive and can, in case the queen dies, molt into a queen given plenty of nourishment and time.
