A concise, clear, interesting tutorial.
It addresses what can be defined the most common drawback of hdr and tonemapping, that often produce images which look somehow un-natural, due to color over-saturation and light halos along darkest edges.
Since the tutorial gives no detailed explanation of what hdr and tonemapping are, the described technique can sound a little obscure to non experienced photographers (or, better, to photographers who are not so familiar with complex post processing operations), but nonetheless every step is well explained and the flow can be easily followed by anyone, even if it requires some manual step (a little more than clicking on a do-it-all button).
The programs used by the author are multiplatform (they are available for windows, mac and linux), and this is a valuable plus. And, best of all, they are free software (free as in speech, not just as in beer), so we have a way to experiment with hdr at no cost, and those who can code may also improve the way the software work and the results it produces.
Thank for sharing your knowledge.

i threw windows out of my window in 2001. since then i only installed linux on my pcs, and in the last few years i approached mac os as an easier alternative. it is based on bsd, so it's a llinux' close relative, but the gui is obviously apple-proprietary. i happened to port some application from linux to mac os, with good results. mac os requires less administrative time, and this is important to me since i have a little spare time for my hobbies and the satisfaction for a geek approach to computers is lowering as my age increases.

anyway, the most interesting tip i found in your tutorial is masking by difference. i use to mask by overlay and some little testing i've just done showed that the difference-based mask can yield better results. so, thank you again for sharing your findings.

I too appreciate multiplatform open-source software. I think I appreciate it even more now that I use Linux exclusively. There's nothing more irritating than find the perfect tutorial that makes reference to software you can't afford to own.
Thanks for the well-written critique. I'm glad you liked it.

I have no idea why they called the Linux package qtpfsgui, and the identical Windows program got the name Luminance. But there is finally a Luminance package for Linux, so I use Luminance now.

Well, actually there is an awesome reason for the name, but it doesn't prevent the name from sounding weird.
The program name can be decomposed in 3 parts: Qt - pfs - gui
1. Qt - the program uses Qt4 to show its graphical widgets.
2. pfs - this was the name of the main backend library and original sourcecode base.
3. gui - This simply stands for graphical user interface.

Put them all together and you get qtpfsgui.
I guess somewhere between the compiling of the original Linux package and the during the design process for the resulting Windows program the designers decided to call it something different. Luminance sounds MUCH BETTER in my opinion.

but luminance sounds much cooler, better, and is easier to remember... xD i just remember that program as the keyboard bashed name program.
