Birdie's backstory is bloody depressing I think.

Agreed, Jesus Christ reading that backstory is part of the reason I try to keep him looking cute. Why does Ding want to destroy our emotions?

Man is he good at that. (I haven't bought the art gallery/soundtrack for The Painful, though I really need to)Β

aahhhh yes you do need to! The art is fantastic, really hi-res - i basically raided it to make wallpapers. I absolutely love the soundtrack. I can't get over how talented Dingaling is! and he's handsome like...what is this ding how you do this

The soundtrack of both the Joyful and the Painful has been stuck in my head for weeeeeeeks. There are a few in my workout playlist, which I'm sure says something about me. And I'm afraid I can't quite comment on his caliber of handsome. xD

lmfao it's good workout music though! I'm pretty sure this is Ding if you're curious, I haven't delved too deeply to confirm this but it looks like it's either him or someone sharing his name, lol

I'm serious. I don't know if I wish I was or wasn't.

Nah, that can't be him. He isn't wearing a parka made from a rug and he still has all his limbs.Β

Good lord. XD Wait a sec weren't we talking about LISA

What did you think of the Joyful?

I really liked it! The interactions between Buddy and Rando were tearing my heart out, but I wouldn't have it any other way.
((plus it just added to the soundtrack in ways i hadn't expected but definitely needed, 666 Chop Kill Deluxe is my jam))

You?

The soundtrack grew on me as I listened to more of it - I really like it now.

Block of text incoming!

My opinion on the Joyful is a bit mixed.
I had a tough time with the story. I couldn't root for Buddy like I could root for Brad. Brad's journey was worthy of sympathizing with - a broken man trying to save the only thing he cares about through any means necessary. He was a very stoic protagonist, and thus very rarely interrupted the gameplay flow with dialogue. Even if some of the things he did were... questionable, I always liked him.Β
Most of the Joyful's story is carried by conversations between Buddy and Rando. Rando I love as a character, and would have liked to see him explored more in-depth (in a perfect world, there'd be a third DLC where you play as Rando. Plenty of unanswered questions. I don't think it ever explained why Brad doesn't consider him a son... unless he was lying about the 'adopted' part. I dunno). Buddy, on the other hand, was hard to support. She wasn't a dynamic character until the very end of the game, which I suppose is the point. But it would have been nice for her to slowly grow more willing to kill or perhaps even lessΒ willing to kill as the DLC went on. What would have happened if the bosses came in the opposite order - if you fought the big, tough bosses earlier on, and the weaker, but not necessarily "bad" bosses later on? Killing Dice Mahone is a lot easier than killing Mr. Beautiful. Perhaps Buddy could have slowly seen what she was doing as the Joy took effect. It was just hard to like her much, but then again that might have been the idea.
The Joyful was also a little more exposition-heavy; the flow of gameplay would be interrupted by conversations between Buddy and Rando every once in a while. In the Painful, Brad wasn't a very talkative protagonist and often the story would need to be told in flashbacks or through hallucinations, which made things a lot more nebulous and opened the player up to speculation. I actually think Nern existed to mock the exposition-dumps that are present in so many other post-apocalyptic bits of media. It wasn't bad in the Joyful, but it was there.
Then there was tone - where the Painful was rife with dark humor, the Joyful had very little. There were some chuckles here and there, but most of the time it was gut punch after gut punch where the Painful was a roller coaster... of gut punches. I don't know where this metaphor is going.
I missed having a party. Putting together a team of bizarre perverts was something I really got a kick out of, but I can see why it wouldn't have worked in the Joyful.Β

Block of text end!

I apologize for that. XD Been on my mind.Β

Joyful's not super fresh in my mind, so although i can't comment on a lot of the specifics, your points ring true to me! I did feel disconnected with Buddy, basically spent the entire time yelling at the screen what Rando wouldn't say lmao. I'm always interested in games that do that though, when they strip your ability to make choices and force you to do things you never would. I can understand how she came to be that way considering the main storyline, but still stahp buddy just stahp seriously-

I missed the little flashbacks and odd sequences too. The original Lisa had a sort of fridge sadness to me, is that a real term? Like the silly explanations and characters would make me laugh at the time, but the more I'd think about how absurd everything was and whether anyone really had a point to being there, the sadder it all became. It's the sort of game I'm grinning while playing, then as soon as the catchy tunes and characters go away I'll sit for an hour in silence and consider my place in the universe.

Joyful seemed more straight-up sad to me iirc. The tone wasn't as complex as in the original I guess? (screeches again that it's been a while since i played so i dunno if i'm remembering right) but I definitely missed all the quirky characters that cropped up in the main game. That's one thing I loved about Lisa: every enemy had a name, and I rarely ever noticed repeated sprites. I know they were like kickstarter backers or something, but they still made it such a vivid world.

jesus christ i love being critical of things i like, i'm not being facetious it's actually really interesting to me. so i'm glad you've shared your thoughts!

Oddly enough, I actually replayed Joyful but not Painful, even though I liked Painful a bit more. I'm glad you see things a bit how I do, was worried I'd sound like an ass.

In that line of thinking, I think my favorite of the bunch is what they did with Terry Hintz in both games. He's really an "Oh ha ha look at how zany he is" in the Painful, but his tiny segment in the Joyful actually gave rise to some fan theories - some people suggested he set up the opening with the dog on purpose just so he might find a friend for once. I like that theory.

One of the other things I really liked about the Painful is that I didn't want to know why the world became like it was. I didn't question the Fishmen, I didn't question the weird things on Resort Island, I didn't question why Buddy just showed up in Brad's lap. I almost wish that Yado hadn't been included as a character so concretely in the Joyful, but again, I can understand why he would be. Being nebulous all the time and having your own world is great, but eventually there are questions that need answering.

I hope Dingaling keeps on with the series, though I'm not sure where he'd go from here. Did you play LISA: The First?

(Oh god we're going to go on forever with this)

Cant get enough of the style that you've got going on, this looks just amazing Birdie was one of my personal favourites right up until he got rendered into a pile of fleshy mush by a biker gang who had abducted him the night before...
