Geez, this one was a lot of work. Basically I did too many panels, so what you see here is a digital combination of several missing panels. Then I kept finishing early... Thinking I was done, shutting everything down, putting it online, then noticing that something was uncolored or didnt look right or whatever...

Anywho, it's a pretty good one. The intial ending was to have the first machine release poisonous gas, then my guy would say something like "Oh great, now I'm being killed by poisonous gas" or whatever.

About half way in I came up with the idea of him using the hand-dryer, except the hand drier would be a little sleazy and the whole thing would be portrayed in a seamy way. The degraded protagonist would return to the table and Inez would say "What happened?" to which he would angrily respond "Nothing!".

Anywho, because that would have taken more panels/time, I went with this.

If the air-dryer had a personality... It would definately be that rejected foreign kid in high school that nobody liked.

The first machine is kind my take on those new fangled motion activated paper towel dispensers, which are obviously designed to be inefficient and get you to use less paper towels.

Hehe, I never use a hand-dryer if there's a paper towel dispenser, so I can't help but feel sorry for the hand-dryer here...

Robotic bathrooms are bitchy. I feel that people are recording me taking a dump through that eye. In fact, the red light reminds me of the computer that was threatening to kill the astronauts. Nothing worse than being killed by a public bathroom.

I really love how you wrote out your thought process on this. I liked your other ideas as well. As much as I liked this one (I've experienced these new fangled towel dispensers as well and needless to say I was incarcerated for three months), I have to say that the organization of the panels seemed a little confusing. I'd suggest either numbering them or think of a better way to present them to flow better.

I thought that might be a problem... I've been having to think about panels a lot more since I started breaking away from the 4 panel format. I think the solution is to buy some graphing paper and the panels on that so I can vary the size and shapes of the panels freely... Or more ideally get a tablet notebook, but who has the money for that? Not I.

Graphing paper would be a good idea just to figure out the layout of the comic. Of course, depending on the comic, it could add a lot of time to your process. I would suggest doing the graphing paper idea one for your next detailed comic, but also (maybe) adding very discreet numbers in the corner. I've read comics since I was very young and I remember many cartoonists doing that. I don't know, it's just an idea.

Oh man, I love it. Not only is it fun and interesting, but it makes a good point. Both of those machines frequently annoy me... And you only resort to the air dryer when you can't get any paper towels. I dunno if it's better for the environment, but it's just too slow...

If there are two things I hate about the otherwise lovable world of commercialism and economicalism (is that a word?), they are air dryers and motion-senser paper towel dispensers. I prefer to dry my hands with my shirt or jeans.

what is the name of your main character?

Exzachly In reply to Sonda [2007-10-29 06:50:49 +0000 UTC]

When I started out the main character was me. When i started I knew nothing about webcomics but the more I read the more I saw how cliched it is to do a webcomic with yourself starring as the main character. So, technically its still me but I very rarely call him by his name, just because I feel a little embarrassed by it now.

You know what your character really reminds me of even though I semi-guessed it may be a reflect of you? He seems like one of those characters we can all relate to. I'm not even male, but I see myself in him. It really is ingenious how the comic grew and the characters developed in the way that everyone can relate and see themselves in it, yet it still has your personal style and mark.

I wish I could say I planned or intended any of that stuff, haha. I don't give much thought to the relatability of the guy, though I do have a basic blueprint for what the character is like... kind of a cheerful, childish (at times unintentional) jerk. You can kind of get your character to do anything and still be likable as long as they're innocently happy about it.

Well even though you didn't really plan it, the character is definitely a mirror character for the readers. I know there is an actual English literature word for the type of character, but I'm incredibly lazy (and a bamf). Also, I want to add that out of the cartoonists that I watch your character definitely has not only the most identifiable personality, but also he's what I want to be when I grow up.
