This one perfectly illustrates a point I once tried to make to a profoundly urban vegetarian girl who had somehow managed to convince herself that she was "close to nature". The kind that take a B747 from Amsterdam to Costa Rica to go on "eco" vacations and see monkeys "in the wild", and buy off any potential CO2 guilt by paying a few Euros extra for the airline to plant some imaginary tree somewhere. Her point was that a railroad running through a forested area shouldn't be put back in use because the poor innocent bambi deer would get startled by the trains. Having been there numerous times myself (unlike her) and witnessed the complete indifference of the wildlife towards passing trains, I was trying to reassure her that bambi honestly couldn't care less about a cargo train passing every hour or so at slow speed. But of course there's no getting through to people like her. What she didn't realize was that she and her "deeply concerned" buddies were being manipulated and used by the port or Rotterdam in order to deny the port of Antwerp direct access to the German Ruhrgebiet. These Big Economic Interests are quite skilled at recruiting those who believe they're "anti big money". That was my favorite piece of railroad track, a single semi-rusty track on an embankment running through the middle of nowhere. On hot summer days it had this distinct High Noon atmosphere with the air trembling from heat above the track and the grasshoppers and crickets making their familiar noises, and lizards shooting off in all directions as you approached. The only thing lacking was the cry of an eagle every now and then.
