That almost happened to me in PA when CP tried to kill NS. THANK GOD that didn't happen!

Thank you! In Chicago...we went from all these cool different rairoads to a handful, and CNS was one of my favs...at least I recorded it when I had the chance. BN was my fav railroad...now it's BNSF with boring GE "Pumpkins"! Oh well...I still love photographing trains!

The A&M...cool all those Alcos. Nice. Even now SOO still has a prescence but the CP is going CN on them...re-paint!

*nod* It's hard for me to get used to the Turbo roar still at times since i'm so used to just streight up Alco growl. hehe That and the alco black smoke the A&M's #16 switcher used to make when it moved. hehe
Eyeah.. I wish they could keep the old paint and just at worse do as UP and sticker over the old SOO text. Of course Ive heard of UP trying to repaint new units in old company schemes... and I kinda cringe at that too. I like to see the units with some character of their heritage.. instead of just new units trying to look like the old ones.

Well, the heritage units, though different, are nothing like the original! And I remember the BRC Alcos...So cool!

I wish I could get more into steam...I love them. They are so impressive. but my heart is in diesels...pre 1990! But especially first and second gen ones!

When I first got serious about ID-ing locomotives, I bought the "Diesel Spotters Guide" which was an invaluable resource. When I got back into railfanning after a 10 year hiatus, I bought "Locomotives: The Modern Diesel and Electric Reference" So I could tell a GEVO from a Dash 9...Also Wikipedia has great info.
With steam. at the Illinois Railway Museum, standing next to those awesome monsters, I couldn't help but be impressed. I just grew up in the early 70s and those diesels hit my sweet spot!

I personally think that the BNSF merger is the only reason UP bought CNW. UP was desperate for extra mileage and they already had connections with the Northwestern so I can see why they were a first choice for merger.

I don't know the specifics...just the 90s were the era of big-time consolodation and mergers...UP got real big so BN needed to reciprocate. CNW already was pretty close with UP, so it seemed inevitable (unfortunately!)

I think it was inevitable just because of CNW's Powder River Basin lines. Man, I know I told you this before but I wish BN had split CN with CP Rail like they planned. Then some American roads could've invaded Canada instead of them invading the American lines!

Actually UP went bankrupt and CNW helped out sense UP had trackage rights and gave them business. Then with UP got on their feet they took CNW. Wow!

Sadly for UP, they had even worse financial problems when they bought out SP after CNW!

Yeah that was in 1997 I believe as well. SP 8196 is the only dash 9 left in Pine Bluff ARK sense they took the 819. There are a few SP 266 309 352 I know those 3 are left. It's crazy. Darn UP!

Man, that's making me kick myself even more for not taking a picture of an unpatched SP Dash 9 when it came thru my town :/
UP may suck for repainting them but they might leave the last two SP Dash 9's alone like they did with the last two CNW Dash 9's. At least UP cares about their heritage unlike some other class 1's. *cough*BNSF*cough*

Imagine a BNSF heritage program...so cool! I guess their heritage program is all the un-repainted Geeps and SD40-2s.

True for some reason one of the CNW's 8646 is at North Platte and has been taken out of service. For now. I don't know what the deal is and the other CNW stays in it's territory in Chicago on local and transfer job's as the SP 8196 in Pine Bluff so if you don't live there you'll never see them. Yes the heritage unit's are nice but man... I miss the old days in the 90's!

There'sonly one reason as to why they did...and it was the Powder River Basin! (or at least that's what I believe)

They already had strong ties with CNW and had their connection through the CNW...
