تقع محافظة الليث في جنوب إقليم الحجاز بالمنطقة الغربية للمملكة العربية السعودية وهي إحدى محافظات منطقة مكة المكرمة وتطل غرباً على البحر الأحمر وتمتد إلى سروات الحجاز شرقاً ويصل امتدادها جنوباً حتى محافظة القنفذة ويمر بها الطريق الساحلي جدة - جيزان، والليث تبعد عن مكة المكرمة 180 كم جنوباً، وتبعد عن جدة 190 كم، وأولى قراها تبعد عن مكة 90 كم، وتقدر مسـاحة المحافظة بحوالي 30 ألف كم2 ويزيد عدد سكانها عن 500 ألف نسمة موزعين بين المناطق الحضرية والقرى الجبلية والساحلية والهجر وهي مدينة ساحلية تطل على البحر الأحمر وكانت ميناء تجاري فيها سبق يستقبل الحجاج من شتى أمصار العالم وكانت الليث فيما مضى ميناء تجاري يستقبل البضائع الواردة من جيزان واليمن وسواحل أفريقيا وتصدر إلى مكة المكرمة وجدة عن طريق السفن الشراعية ويرجع سبب تسميتها بذلك الاسم إلى وادي الليث الذي تقع عند مصبه، وهي ميناء قديم مذكور في خط سير الفيل الذي جلبه ابره الاشرم لعنه الله لهدم الكعبة، كما ذكر ذلك البني المتوفي سنة 1340هـ} وقد ذكر "حسن الفقيه 1413هـ:{ أن الليث بلدة ساحلية تقع جنوب مكة المكرمة وهي حاضر المنطقة التابعة لها وسميت باسم وادي الليث المشهور نشأتها كانت حول بداية القرن أصبحت الليث الميناء
