Description 5th in my big cat series, I decided on this close up white tiger walking in the falling snow. While I love how beautiful white tigers are, I do not support the production of these animals in captivity.

White tigers are are born without the ability to produce pheomelanin, which is responsible for the orange pigment. Natural tiger behavior in the wild prevents the mutation from occurring frequently outside of captivity; due to their aversion to inbreeding. Fewer than 1 in 10,000 wild tiger births result in this mutation. Since the mutation is recessive, inbreeding is most likely to produce it.

Novelty has fueled the purposeful breeding of this mutation in captivity, and many end up needing rescue or suffer serious genetic health issues. I think we should focus on breeding tigers for health and conservation, not color.
