Description
A Necessary Evil?
Since her return, Princess Luna has not had a vacation. She has been busy settling into her new responsibilities and everything else that has changed in the last thousand years. So she has been a little over due for one. But no sooner then she leaves, than Queen Chrysalis choses to attack Ponyville and Canterlot catching everyone completely by surprise.
At first Luna hears of the attack, but is assured by Celestia that the situation is under control and not to worry the elements will take care of Chrysalis and her small changeling army. So Luna goes back to enjoying her holiday, however she can’t escape the feeling that something not right “why would Queen Chrysalis attack Ponyville with such a small force?”.
Back in Canterlot, early reports of the battle in Ponyville seem encouraging. The mane six report that they have rounded up a lot of Chrysalis’s minions and the rest along with Chrysalis herself appear to be retreating into the Everfree, being chased by some royal guards Celestia had sent to Ponyville to assist Twilight and her friends. In Canterlot some more royal guards assisted from the air by the wonderbolts drive off the changeling’s who were attacking Celestia’s Shield. Twilight asks Celestia if they to should follow. Celestia answer that they should leave it to the royal guards and that Twilight should write an after battle report instead. However, just when it seems everything has calmed down, and Celestia drops her shield, the changeling’s launch a surprise two prong attack on both Ponyville and Canterlot at the same time. With many of the elite guards wondering around the Everfree and white tail forests, and the mane six gathered together unaware in Twilight’s study. Ponyville and Canterlot fall quickly to a massive changeling counterattack.
Celestia to, is caught unaware of what was going on and barley has time to raise a shield over the throne room before it to is overcome by changeling minions. Celestia finds out that Twilight and her friends have all been captured and she now has only a few precious seconds to send an urgent message to Luna before Chrysalis and her minions break down the barrier.
Upon hearing of what has transpired in Canterlot, Luna teleports herself right into the throne room. However she doesn’t have much practice teleporting, and so Luna ends up teleporting herself about twenty feet in the air and ends up crashing clumsily to the floor. Laughter erupts from the changeling minions in the room as Luna feebly attempts to right herself. Before Luna can gets to her feet and put her crown back on, Chrysalis takes it from her. While admiring her new prize Chrysalis mocks Luna “My that was some heroic entrance, It seems you will be even easier to beat than your sister. You know, maybe you should save yourself the embarrassment. This whole saving Equestria thing, really isn’t your cup of tea. You should just save everyone the trouble and go back to that rock in the sky for another thousand years of so and let a real queen run things for a while. I’ll take good care of your subjects!”
When Chrysalis sees that Luna is not back down she further antagonizes Luna. “Leave now while you still can, I am already more powerful than you or your sister! If you stay and fight I’ll just do to you what I already did to her!” Luna looks back at her sister lying on the ground battered, bruised and barley conscious. Luna looks around at the throne room filled with changelings and there freighted and incapacitate victims. At this sight Luna is filled with a rage she has not felt in a very long time. Luna grits her teeth a growls her response “YOU LIE!!! YOU OLD HAG! you are no match for my sister or I in a fair fight. You use deceit to achieve your fleeting and feeble victories. You shall find this time no different form your last attempt to enslave pony kind, ON GUARD YOU WENCH!!!” with that Luna begins to charge up a spell to attack Chrysalis all the time unaware of the blind and savage rage coursing through her. However, Celestia is all too aware of it, she has felt this rage before, she felt it when Luna first turned into Nightmare Moon! Celestia looks over at her sister wishing she could muster up the strength to teleport Luna out of here, or teleport Twilight and her friends in or even just yell at Luna, Anything to get Luna back to her senses.
Does one evil cancel out another? Will Luna defeat Chrysalis? Will Luna defeat Chrysalis only to succumb to her dark side? Only time will tell.

This is similar to a story idea I've been toying with for a while now; Equestria is threatened by an enemy that the mane six and the other princesses are unable to stand against, and as a desperate last resort, Luna is forced to become Nightmare Moon again in order to prevent the destruction of ponykind.

afther luna finished those word her horn began to glow and lighting was surroundin luna as the color of the lightin began to change his color from white to red , celestia looked at luna terrified looking the inmense amount of power she had charged , as quick as she could celestia covered her ears and grit her teeth. Crysalis ordered his minions to attack luna but the lighting surrounded luna repeled all the charging foes , however some changerlings where smarter and shoot at luna but just before any of the shoots coul hit luna an inmense flash surrounded the hrone room followed by a huge sound blast. A huge red lighting was shot at crysalis as she managed to cast a defensive shield however the shield just reduced the damage. Even when the damage was reduced crysalis was hurt her front legs wheren't responding and half of her body was numb.
( another shot like that and im history) crysalis thought as soon as she jelled " what on tartarus are you waitning for! attack her you idiots she is weakened" she shouted as all the minions on the room that wherent knocked down or deafened by the explocion rushed at luna. They tackled luna but the first changerlin who touched her began to scream in horror. As crysalis and other changerlins saw amazed and in fear how the changerling that touched luna was turning pitch black and then he where absorbed by luna. As the other changerling that where near they tried to took distance off luna but they where impaled by baclack crystals that spawnee out of luna's shadow.
celestia saw all the events in fear as she tought ( not even when i fought nightmare moon 1000 years ago where this deadly) , soon luna's shadow expanded in all the throne room and no changerlin or pony could see a thing. Celestia wasnt daft as she hear all the screams of agony of the remaining changerlings in a matter of seconds the only creatures remaining in the room was celestia , crysalis an luna.
the room were back to normal and crysalys saw in horror how luna was comin close to her. Crysalis tried to move but her front legs wheren't responding but her wings where intact. When she started to flutter her wings luna shoot her a blast of pure magic knoking her out , then she used her telekinesis to launch all the debris caused by the first blast at luna , luna avoided mani of the debris but some pebbles hit her making her more angry. When crysalis tried to move but then she felt huge pain in her back legs "aieeeeeeee" she screamed as she turned back to see that luna pierced both legs whit steel pipes then crysalys shouted " stop i yield you won"! Luna did not listened and picked. Two spear that where lying in the ground whit her horn "
"no crysalys i had enough of you" luna shouted as she launched the spears at crysalis front hooves "yeeagghhh" crysalis screamed, now unable to move crysalis used her telekinetic to try to remove the steel pipes of her back legs , as luna opened a hole in the roof she fled up the roof of the throne room as she started to charge another lighting bolt.
( this went too far luna its out of control ) celestia thought as whit the last remaining strenght celestia flew to reach luna. As she saw how the lighting went from white to red to violet. She knew that attack would not only kill crysalys but also cripple the very foundation of canterlot. As then celestia placed herself in front of luna.
" Luna stop" celestia said as whit a more enraged voice luna responded " why ? She hurt you she hurt OUR people villians like her dont should be allowed even to exist!"
Celestia looked in concern how luna's eyes an mouth where turning back to nightmare moon celestia needed to do or say somthing quick before luna.
" Do not become the monster they already think you are"
whit those words luna remembered somthing king sombra said to her so many moon ago
" the only diference bettwen you and me luna is that i accepted the monster im am"
whit that luna stopped and said.." Im...im not a monter" afther that her hair returned to be blue as the pitch black hair retracted to her hindquarters then both sisters decended.
"Aww what a heartwarming speech now can you REMOVE THIS THINGS OF MY HOOVES" crysalis shouted. As luna looked at crysalis she aprooached her and said your crimes shalt not go unpunished" luna said as she removed one of her front royal horse shoes . " get you out of me monster! Dont come any closer crysalys said" as luna placed her naked hoof on crysalis shadow. Crysalys felt a cold and shivers like no ever in her life then luna removed all the binds that where keeping crysalis on the floor , even whit those nadty wouns in her legs crysalis where able to stand then she said " you little fool no one ever humilliates me" as crysalis tried to launch a magic attack on luna but nothing happened , she tried many times but nothing happened " WHAT YOU DID TO ME " crysalis said " i took your horn's shadow and whit it your magic an habilities" luna replied " as crysalys was in shock she saw her shadow indeed her horn was missing. Then celestia teleported crysalys.
Sister... Where did you ?

Okay so let me start my reply by apologizing for taking so long. First my computer got a virus and now I have to reply to all comments on my phone, not my favotite means by which to respond. Second I was not sure how to respond to your comment. So if my reply is off of the mark then my apologies.
So first off I never meant for any of my art to be construed as condoning religious persecution, communism or fascism. I don't believe that an evil re purposed to another end is any less evil. Regardless of the cause.
That being said, my picture was not ment to express such an opinion. I originally got the idea of drawing Luna in mid transformation from a dream I had while half awake, I thought it was cool so I drew it.
After drawing luna I had to create a premise that made sense. I came up with this one because I have always thought of Luna as being in an eternal battle between wanting to be good and and fighting her natural evil side.
You see I am a Huge Luna fan, but I dont believe that she is innocent, nor do I believe that she was possessed by nightmare forces like the iDW comics say. I tend to believe in the oringinal story from the first episode. That Luna became overwhelmed by her own feelings of jeaously and thus became vengeful to wards her sister. I believe that even after her transformation back she still struggles with these dark thoughts and feelings.
the premise of the picture is not that Luna's evil side wins the day necessarily. But that her evil side can still surface. In her battle with the Chrysalis, Luna becomes so carried away by her emotions that she transforms into Nightmare Moon . The problem with this is that once she transforms into Nightmare Moon, she may not stop her attack after defeating Chrysalis. Luna/Nightmare Moon may try to take over again.
I didn't make this premise clear enough in the description, so that is my fault.

An interesting and well reasoned comment. So in this case Luna is somewhat like BrucE Banner, containing a great power that can be used for good, but with the risk that it lose control and maybe even consume her? I think I've seen a fan animation about Sombra that involved something similar (SHE was the one that sealed away the Crystal Empire.)
Did the iDW comics ever explicitly say the nightmare forces weren't Luna? I mean the monsters were just possessed cute things, Rarity was possessed but Luna in the end beat... whatever it was by standing up to it. As far as I was aware they were just en external manifestation of her own dark feelings. (Another iDW comic, the one with the mirror world, suggests Luna was acting 'dark' for some time before the NMM saga.)

If Chrysalis is all that powerful, why Celestia just said "why should we bother to do anything, Twilight and her freinds can beat Chrysalis and her army on their own?
First, main 6 must do all the work while the princesses hide under a barrier, and the moment barrier is down, Celestia is defeated and Canterlot is overhelmed, I really dislike this idea.
In the show at least we saw that main 6 cannot alone fight an entire army and that they cannot save the day every single time, so I really dislike the idea that everyone besides main 6 are incompetent.
