Description B-52E-50-BW, 57-0099 assigned to the 22d Bomb Wing, based at March AFB seen at MASDC in February 1984.

Note the tail walkway area denoted by the black stripes on the left side of the vertical tail. The tail could be folded for hangaring the aircraft. This was the area that maintenance personnel could traverse when the tail was folded.

The C-135 aircraft had a similar walkway [link] that appears as a "check mark' pattern on the left side of the tail.

There is no marking on the right side of the tail on any B-52 or KC-135 aircraft.

I should have mentioned it, I have seen one Buff like that but I thought it was part of the maintenance inspection, I did not realise they could fold down conventionally for hangarage, I thought it was part of a maintenance procedure.

The B-52's I was around were 'hangared' in a structure called a "Nose Dock" that had a sealed hole in the door so the empannage was outside. It was used for tankers as well.

Ah.
I ended up asking one of the guys at work and he said it was a pain to fold the tail of a B-52 lol

I imagine so. It is a big surface to have to crane up and down.
