Description F-15E-42-MC, 86-0186 assigned to the 461st TFTS, 405th TTW on the "Jester" ramp at Luke AFB as seen in January 1990.

It is unusual to see an F-15E with the conformal fuel tanks (CFT) removed. Note the "LA" tail code and Tactical Air Command patch on the fin.

I don't get why I like the "E" and "D" feels awkward...

They do.Β  I wish I would have taken a picture of the removed CFT on the handling trailer. They look like a half of a canoe when they are removed

If there were removable, were they "jettison" capable?

Not to my knowledge.Β  I cannot imagine the separation characteristics of these two non aerodynamic shapes trying to separate during flight...

On reflection, understandable.

There's a hint on the paint that shows where they were fitted.

Yessir. The seals where the tanks but up to the fuselage would wear into the paint.
