Description 707-396C, OE-IDA, c/n 20043 seen on the MASDC recieving line in August 1985.

This aircraft was a customs impound for weapons or something to that effect. It sat at MASDC for years and then one day we noticed it missing.

Many years later it was modified to a presidential fleet VC-137C, carrying the AFSN 85-6973.

I saw it several times at Luke AFB when VP Dan Quayle was visiting family in nearby Wickenburg AZ, but I never was able to photograph the jet.

This was a beautiful jet!

Funny thing to think that a gun-runner would later become a presidential plane - it's more a story you'd expect about a Connie somewhere in Central-America, not of a 707 in the USA! XD

That's another unexpected twist in that particular airframe's story... o_o

Not really. The USAF needed low time/ lo cycle airframes for the E-8 program.

They were quite smoky too, like the B-52's. A few P-3's in the background too.

At the time, the P-3B's were being retired. I did not shoot many of them becuase the marks were scrubbed.

I think some were recycled into foreign marks.

I forgot about hose. I remember the P-2's in their bright colours though, and the Martin Mars, now that was some aeroplane.

I shot a few P2 fire bombers back in the day. They were very pretty airplanes.
