Description F-4E-44-MC, 69-7551 assigned to the 36th TFS, 51st TFW. Shot on the line at Osan AB, ROK in December 1988.

This was the jet assigned to a friend of mine when it was in the 388th TFW at RTAB Korat during the Viet Nam war.

I will dig out my 82 yearbook, as I recall there was more info on the kills made by the 36 TFS aircraft. I was the crewchief of 376 in the background 82 - 83.

69-7551 was a wing bossbird, but seems to be just marked as a line jet here.

7551’s MiG-21 kill claim was unconfirmed, though being a Phanatic I like to think it did happen. There’s no confirmed info as to the date of the kill, except that it was in fall 1972, and the crew names.

Check out the second pic in this link – it’s a pictorial depiction of the 35 TFS’s MiG kills. The 35 TFS was TDY to the 388 TFW during Operation Linebacker, and some 35 TFS crews flew the 388 TFW’s F-4Es and scored MiG kills in them. There are 2 kill claims in this pic that are unconfirmed: those by LT Young/LT Claiborne and CPT Lippemeir/LT Nelson. Lippemeir/Nelson’s “kill” was made using the gun, so it had to be an F-4E they were flying; the other claim was with the AIM-9, so it could have been either the F-4D or E Young/Claiborne flew. All the other 388 TFW confirmed MiG kills in 1972 were attributed to other F-4 tail numbers. Put two and two together and there’s a fair chance either of these crews flew 7551 and scored her “kill.”

Thanks for the info! My friend , who had his name on this jet when he was assigned to the 469th TFS at Korat, has information on the kill for this jet.

I think your friend must be one of the guys whose names appears on Twobobs' decal sheet of this jet when it was serving with the 388 TFW. Could you ask him about the kill info that he has, and post it here? I'd love to learn more about it.
Thanks in advance!

The data I have is that it shot at a MiG-21 w/ an AIM-9 on Oct 1972. The acft was destroyed by since the kill was not confirmed officially, it was not credited

I bet.

I wish I could have taken shots of the "Flying Tigers" A-10 group in Afghanistan, but you know how it is with OPSEC I assume.

Heres a 23 TFW jet in 1987 during a bomb comp at Luke AFB [link] At the time the unit was based at England AFB, LA. The migrated to pope AFB after England closed. They are now at Moody AFB GA.
