Description For a project, we were asked to create an image or write a paper describing ourselves as related to the goddesses Demeter, Artemis, Athena, Aphrodite, Hera, and/or Persephone.
Waterfalls have long been connected to the underworld and afterlife (probably not a little because of their entrancing qualities and the number of suiciders who leap off their sides each year). The waters in this picture symbolize both the underworld and also descend into it, splashing down into a bottomless abyss while the ethereal mists rise up from its cold dark depths. I've connected myself with Persephone, wife of Hades, in the waterfall because while I'm not a religious person I am a spiritual one. Often I'll lie in bed and think about the mysteries of the universe and how scientific knowledge might merge with theological wisdom. The source of much of my imagination starts in spiritual contemplation.
Yet while Persephone preoccupied herself with the dead and afterlife, I'm more interested in this life. The wild untamed growth, swallowing cities and surmounting cliffsides, represents my Artemis side. Artemis was the goddess of the hunt and, like her, I enjoy walking (in imagination and physical reality) the leaf-strewn forest paths. Absolute delight flashes across my face whenever I see a squirrel or a bird and I could spend an eternity watching the animals strut through their habitats in the zoo.
Athena is represented by the wonderful lighting and twin swordswomen statues (metallic behemoths based on old Athenian sculptures) who's crossed swords and shining gold surface recognize the importance of knowledge and defense. I'm a fierce fighter, especially when facing injustice or tackling uniquely difficult projects. Underneath the wild growth of the rainforest you can see the ruins of a city and steps ascending into the sky. This is my love of culture and civilization and constant stepping-up of my abilities and intelligence.
In the far background is a mountain range, showing my Hera side. I champion Athena for her love of power to fight injustice, but feel my love of power also comes from Hera somewhat. I enjoy power because with it I can complete projects and keep full control over their progress. However I do not want power for the sake of having power, I prefer using the power for useful means (more like Athena than Hera). This is why Hera is represented so little in this image.

wow, very nice "symbolic-ness" I love it. the clouds are well shaded and realistic, yet very stylistic.

AVAST! Tremble in frear an' prepare t' be boarded by the Rum Pyrates!

Yer fixed detail in th’ gladiators an’ ruins gi'es th’ impression o' monuments t' a bygone era, while th’ nigh impressionist abstract brush strokes used fer th’ forest an’ waterfall depicts th’ fluidity o' nature 'ery well.

Arrr, howe'er, t' add more t' th’ stationary feel o' th’ rock face from whence th’ waterfall comes, I recommend a little more detail t' make it fell more immediate. That be one waterfall th’ Bootlegger never seen!....Or 'ave we? I cannae remembah.

Yarr! Ah been batt'n at these stupid crane flies or mosqu'to hawks or whate'er name ye please to gi'e them all night! So's Ah'll be makin' this short and sweet: Suffer mah critiquin' or gimmie all yer swag! Or both!

Ah p'ticularly admire th' perspective o' th' waterfall; it makes me wanna give those lousy, good-fer-nothin' deckhands (who attacked me wit' that unsanitary mop, no less) a nice, wet, permanent vacation... But anyway, th' dynamic angle really gi'es this piece some extra pow'r.

Th' only other comment Ah have t' make is that ye texture the foreground more if ye get a chance, or feel like goin' back t' it. It's not really necessary, but it'd be nice. Fer that reason, Ah'm more'n a mite blue that ye were havin' time issues. O'erall, a ver' well done piece!

Aye, the sense o' motion in th' picture couldn' be more eyecatchin'! Th' flow of th' water and clouds makes them statues ov'r there that much more distinct. Good 'un!

Yarhehehe! Th' movement in yer paintin' adds much t' the overall image. The angle of th' clouds and the arc of th' water into the bottomless depths creates a great sense o' vertigo. Th' picture makes a right in'eresting circle - It really makes the paintin' complete.

If ye want t' emphasize the downward drop even more, p'raps ye could try adding a light sparkle of white t' the waterfall. Th' jitter feature on Painter comes in handy sometimes!

The two of you!
Ya, the only thing I'm not too pleased about was the quality of the rock. But I couldn't work on it more as I was kicked off after 3 hours, otherwise that baby would be glistening like black river rock and as textured as digitally possible (or as much as I can make it).
Jitter might come in handy for quick rock making to, so thanks for the tip Katolin!

Oh and um...Arrg mate-y you have some nice...um...arg booty there (aww !@#%)

I hated that Beast wannabe, I wanted to submit my kestrel monotype or even put up a digital piece, but I hadn't the time to matt them. I'm just lucky Ms. Doran did it for me. But thank you, I did face painting too for the little kids. Everybody wanted a patented ESDA dragon. ACK!

I guessed you would be one. And who wouldn't want THE ESDA dragon painted on their face! I should've gotten one, but it would be odd for some 14 year old trying to get their faces painted with like 6 year olds.
